Favorite movie guilty pleasures?
Ok, the other night I watched, for the umpteenth time, "Xanadu". I'm not delusional about the awfulness of it...a ridiculous story line, silly dialogue, silly choreography, goofy costumes (leg warmers do not a fashion statement make). I find it interesting that Robert Greenwald, who is now a documentary filmmaker, directed this cinematic train wreck.

And...I ADORE every single minute of "Xanadu". I never tire of seeing it.

So...what is your film guilty pleasure?

1. That number with "The Tubes" was pretty good, though.
My guilty pleasures: I'll watch pretty much anything starring California's current Govenor, and any James Bond movie, even the horrible Roger Moore ones.

2. OMG, I just watched that a couple weeks ago!
A friend told me Xanadu looks really good on a laptop, so I watched in my laptop and he was right - it was almost like seeing it in the movies 25 years ago. I love it, too! :-)

I once saw an interview with Olivia Newton-John, where she stated that she asked Robert Greenwald what kind of music he liked. He replied, "I don't like music." She knew at that point that the movie was doomed.

8. Oh, my God.
That's rather unfortunate when you're directing a musical and you don't like music. How can you not like music? :-(

I enjoy the befuddled look Gene Kelly has throughout the movie. :-) But his dance number with Olivia Newton-John ("Whenever You're Away From Me") is magical.

Almost unbearable awful on too many levels to start with, but hey, I love it! I just always skip the Ben Affleck scenes; I'm not this guilty. ;)

14. Oh, CMW....
I certainly think "Armageddon" is awful. The scene where Affleck's character is singing "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane" to Liv Tyler was one of the most cringeworthy scenes ever. :shudder:

Every scene with Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler in it there was awful. But the Russian astronaut just kicked ass. ;)

You asked for 'guilty pleasures,' not good movies! :P

that's for sure. :-)

Steve Buscemi is in "Armageddon", so that makes it almost worthwhile. He's always watchable.

You and your lovely wife are very good, open minded people.

"Xanadu" is, of course, out on DVD. If you ever get your hands on a copy, give it a look. It most certainly is NOT great cinema, not by any stretch of the imagination. But it is a hoot. :-)

28. Be assured, I'll buy it.
And, thank you for the 'open minded' reference. I, personally, think it just needs a mind (not even considered 'open', but common sense) to accept equality. There is no special effort we had to make; this is just natural.

Not Godzirra stuff, though I'll watch that. But I love old space stuff like the Commando Cody serials ("Radar Men from the Moon") and anything with "Planet X" or other such funky junk in the title.

13. Ahem, there is *no* old bad science fiction.
And it's normal physical law that, if a rocket flies on high speed forward, the smoke of the engine goes right up! The attached wires are just stabilizers that reach out into space (space is, where the end of the screen begins.)

I also love "Pretty in Pink". I just adored Andrew McCarthy back in the day, and loved to loathe James Spader. Another good one with them in it is "Less than Zero"...although the movie deviates from the book a great deal.

The Tron Phenomenon is hard to explain, but that movie kicked serious ass, and was so far ahead of it's time. I love watching it even now.

I like the John Hughes films too, especially Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink, even though they are considered low-brow by culture snobs. Sixteen Candles is a masterpiece in my opinion, because of Anthony Michael Hall's performance...everyone in that film did a great job, but he was spot-on.
