Poll question: LA DUers - Where (& when) should we meet again?
Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 11:23 PM by truthseeker1
Whatever area we ultimately decide on, sticking close to a major freeway and/or interchange might be a good idea.

Include any suggestions for specific restaurants or bars you think would work well for a large group of 20-30 rowdy people (not too noisy, not too pretentious, plenty of parking - FREE parking is a nice bonus).

On edit: If you pick OTHER, please specify where :)
Also, what day of the week do you prefer?

5. Actually the Edie's Diner in Marina Del Ray has an outside patio
we could probably reserve a nice chunk of on a weeknight. I wouldn't mind a Thursday.

Food is inexpensive, decent and they have a full bar and ICE CREAM!!!

Not too tough for those inland, they can come across the 105 or down Wilshire to Lincoln and down.

10. Bar and ice cream????
~sigh~ That sounds so good - and a view of the Marina, too? My two bits isn't gonna be much - I missed the Viva gathering, so I'd like to hit this one, and I'm usually pretty flexible. Are we talking Jan, though? I've been asked to join a chorus that meets Tuesdays eves, but I think they start practice mid-Jan. Next fall we get to sing Rachmaninoff's Vespers, one of the most incredibly beautiful choral pieces ever written. And I get to be the oktavist bass! (The chorus director didn't have any low-low basses till now, so hasn't been able to perform Russian music). Oh, this is the Occidental-Foothills Master Chorale, by the way.

13. Here's the group,
http://departments.oxy.edu/choral/ofmc_history.htm

and the Rachmaninoff date's not set. Spring concert will be in May, I think, and include the Faure Requiem and a - mass, I think - by Roy Harris. Jeff Bernstein didn't have an oktavist bass (me) until recently, so hadn't planned the Rachmaninoff. Now he is. Most likely next fall. I'll post for LA DUers.

6. Valley
centrally located, not as far for me to drive from the Antelope Valley. Especially on an evening during the week!

7. In order of selfish personal preference based on driving time...
Valley, Hollywood, Westside.

Downtown's a little far, but I'd do it for the right reason/venue.

Here's a thought: howzabout combining it with a special free event, like a gallery showing, or museum exhibit, say at the Getty? I'd go to Pasadena for the Huntington, for instance.

A few weeks ago I attended a political event (NWPC) at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport and we had the museum to ourselves, and viewing the exhibits made for good ice-breaker conversations.

Just a thought

8. suggestion - BOARDNERS
Hey,

Sorry to miss the last meeting.

I'm in Hollywood, so selfishly, that works for me. Plus, it's near a buncha the freeways and major streets

There's a great old Hollywood speakeasy, called Boardners, that's avail seven nights a week, and has tons of space. It was a bar/restaurant on one side, and on the other side, it's a HUGE cathedral-like wide open church space which has different themed nights. Both sides are co-joined in the back by a very large patio with a bar outside, so plenty of smoking if you want.

BAR SINISTER is its most famous night, the biggest Goth Night in LA. But during the week, it's more subdued. Plus, any of the theme nights dont' kick into gear until 10 or 11. Before the "players" invade, it's simply Boardners. My understanding is that these DU gatherings have been mostly about dinner, meeting around 6, so that's plenty of time to take over this very large place during the "unhip" hours, and then if any of us wanna, we can partake of the revels later in the evening.

It's on Cherokee just below Hollywood Blvd. There's paid parking nearby, but again, if we're meetin early in the eve, street parking would be easier than later.

Here's their site.
http://www.boardners.com/main.php

I have a friend who works the door. I can ask her for some more info on planned gatherings there. It's TONS of space, and a great "best kept secret" in Hollywood.

My 2 cents,

Captain Mike

17. I have SOOO many tales about boardners, I can't recall them all....
movie stars, rock n roll boys... late nights, whiskey straight up, ice water back... stolen kisses...

Wow. talk about memory lane.

Is Micelli's still there? Good italian joint. Tony had the best rug in town.

22. Whats worked the best (and was the funnest) so far?
Lets go there. Maybe then we can make it a regular spot.

If we're still looking for that ideal spot, hmm..what about.....

El Chollo (either Figueroa or Santa Monica)
Marix in Santa Monica
Any spot on Third Street in L.A.
ill keep thinking...

Always am game for a good patio, but this time of year its a little chilly out there, unless weve got lamps***

I was thinking maybe the second week of January - and since people seem to be keen on mid-week, maybe the 13th, 14th or 15th.
