Apartment owners with parrots as pets:
Do you have a Sun Conure, or would you recommend one?

(There's this most adorable one at the pet store; 8 months old and I think she's right for me.)

1. Sun Conure are very talkative but cute as can be.

I fell in-love with a Black-Headed Caique a few years ago.
Miss Frodo loves being part of a flock but she might get jealous if I were to bring home another bird.

11. I love Caiques
they are a hoot! I think the black headed are much prettier than the white bellied.

2. If it's hand raised, go for it.
Conures are sweeties.

3. I also found out they can get very loud...
Might be too loud for an apartment, but I'll have to see. I rather liked that one in the store... Maybe in 2 weeks, time will tell.

6. A sometimes thing
Like most parrots, they tend to mouth off when they're horny or want something which is often a Venn diagram situation. And of course, loud is relative, but then I've dealt with cockatoos doing their air raid siren imitations, so my mileage may vary. I'd say it's repetition that's more annoying. A couple of squawks now and then, not so bad; an hour's worth without taking a breath, very bad.

4. I'd be careful with nonstick cookware.
Sometimes apartments don't have the proper ventilation (even with fans), and the poor birds die from the fumes from nonstick pans.

5. I'd be careful with nondeaf neighbors. My lovebirds made
such a racket I'm surprised my neighbors didn't lynch us all. And we were in a duplex at that time.

7. Sun Conure's are so cute...
I have a cockatiel in an apt and he gets so loud sometimes you ears are ringing. When I ask my neighbors if they can hear him they say ''no'' but I don't believe them, but glad there have not been any complaints. I would get it if it was hand fed and with a sweet disposition.

9. Speaking as a person who worked in an exotic bird store -
where I had the pleasure of working with every kind of bird - I can honestly say SUN CONURES ARE LOUD! LOL.

They are adorable and sweet. But they can be very loud. I don't live in an apartment, but I do live close to the neighbors. So when it was time to bring home a feathered family member, I went with African Greys. They don't scream. They talk, they whistle, they cluck like chickens. (Well, mine does. lol.) They are bigger and more expensive than Sun Conures, but you won't have any neighbor problems. :)

Here is my baby, Yaco.

10. Check with your apartment management first
The last building I lived in didn't allow large birds because of the noise. :(

12. No
Too loud - and I don't think it's fair to the other tenants when there are quieter birds that are just as wonderful. Like your Senegal. :hi:

Unless - and a big unless - your apartment is pretty soundproof. (I've only ever lived in one of those before...most of the ones around here, you can hear papers shuffling in the next suite)
