Two very cool things just happened at the gas station.
En route to buy sushi & beer, I had to stop to get gas. It turned out far better than it normally does for two reasons:

1. It was $1.98/gal at the BP station (NJ). This makes it far less painful to fill up the tank, since I was paying over $3/gal this summer in CT.

2. The guy pumping my gas said to me, "I just want to let you know that I really like your bumperstickers. My brother was over in Iraq and he told me what was going on. We're both voting on your side." I thanked him and said I had some friends over there myself. We flashed each other the peace sign when I was pulling out.

And these are my bumperstickers (minus, the sign, of course):

2. Jersey consistently has some of the cheapest gas in the country AND we don't have to pump it.
Let's face it. New Jersey fucking rules.

23. My NJ relatives LOVE to make that point.
Cheaper than NY and no need to get out of the car. Last time I was there (a month ago) the price per gallon dropped by 10 cents as soon as we crossed the NY/NJ border.

24. And some of the highest property taxes
My husband's sister's family in Middletown pays $16,000 a year in property taxes. The same house here in Montgomery County, MD wouldn't be more than $3,500, if that much.

25. Yeah, but I'd still rather live in NJ.
:P

Actually, I'm planning on moving to NYC within the year.

28. I lived in NJ from 1954 to 1990
and there are a lot of things I love about it. Diners. Friendly people. Bargain shopping. Great ethnic foods. Maryland is kind of stuck-up, at least around the DC suburbs. Many of our relatives and friends live in NJ, and we visit a few times a year.

But we couldn't afford to move back there -- not with those horrendous taxes, sky-high car insurance rates, and traffic gridlock.

7. Oregon has that no self-serve thing too.
Unfortunately, gas there is definitely not $2/gallon. Oh, and the pump jockeys are slow. I don't know if it's like that in New Jersey, but I found myself wishing I could pump my own just to get going.

9. I always go to one of the two BPs stations or the local indy one. The guys there are pretty fast.
I have run into slow ones on occasion though at other stations.

8. Yeah, that's a good point - our gas is pricey but at least we don't have to live
in New Jersey any place that isn't CA.

NJ is one of those full-service only states? I find that so weird, for two reasons: one, I never know if you're supposed to tip, and two, I don't like strangers touching my car (that's a CA thing, too).

11. A couple points:
1. I actually *LIKE* New Jersey.

2. You don't tip.

3. I've never had one of them fuck it up in any way. Oftentimes, they'll even wash your windshield, without asking.

Good to know about the tipping; I couldn't quite figure that out last time I was in Oregon...

36. I love it when they wash my windshield.
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 10:29 PM by Jamastiene
There is only one place that I know of here that pumps it for you. I don't get to go there often, but I love when they wash my nasty windshield. I always joke that they can keep going if they'd like. I don't know what I do to cars. I could park a car in a pristine garage in the cleanest place in the world and dirty up the poor thing. I fog the windshield every single morning, including summer mornings as well. I don't know how I do it. I must be a heavy breather.

Btw, one of my first ever crushes on other girls in high school was a girl from New Jersey. I have a *thing* for Jersey women. I don't know what it is.

I ended up getting:

Spider Roll
Spicy tuna handroll
Unagi
Tuna sashimi

It was very good. Now I'm sipping on some sake.

Oh and welcome to DU!

15. Sushi is the source of my increased focus on Japanese food in general.
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 08:48 PM by ILA
For a while, with regard to Asian cuisines, Chinese food was dominant, and it still is my favourite cuisine, definitely. But, after my exposure to sushi, I've tried miso soup, amongst other things, that are part of Japanese cuisine.

When I know I'll be getting sushi later in the day, that alone is enough to maintain positive spirits.

Thanks for the welcome.

The cheapest is still $2.17 here. I can't remember the last time it was under $2 at all. :wow:

and got 33 mpg.

Now that it costs twice that, my car has a 16 gallon tank...and the mpg is about the same; only the range has changed to protect the driver. ;)

40. I remember driving my Toyota Echo from Jersey to Boston & back on $13 worth of gas.
That car was a fucking death trap though. Cheapest piece of shit Toyota could have possibly ever produced. It would sense a snowflake a 100 miles away and want to skid off the road and it sucked in the wind.

I wish I could afford insurance on my Saab. Oh well, I will be able to again soon. That gets decent gas mileage, is awesome in the snow and fast as hell. The Jeep comes in handy, but it sucks gas. The only real advantage was it was free.
