Jerry Rice or Barry Bonds. What (predominantly) SF player had more impact?
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 11:30 PM by BackDoorMan
In their perspective sport during their whole career...both are still playing and/or expected to play next year, adding to their totals.

Rice: 204 TD's, (including 10 td's rushing) 22,452 yards, (not including yards rushing) 1,517 receptions. (240 plus straight games with at least one reception) Four Super Bowls (three wins)

Bonds: 658 Hr's, 500 SB's, 2,070 BB's, 1743 RBI's, .297 BA 2,495 hits, .602 slugging % One World Series (no win)

This is a tough one...

2. Definitely Jerry Rice
Not only is Rice #1 in every statistical category for Wide Receivers, he's also the NFL's all-time leader in total touchdowns, and total yards. On top of that, he won three championships as one of the key players on one of the greatest teams in NFL history.

Barry Bonds on the other hand isn't #1 in any major statistical category, has fewer than 3,000 hits, has a very pedestrian career batting average of .297, and has never won a championship.

No contest in my mind.

4. Well, as far as Bond's hits...they do walk him more than anybody...

but his.297 (lifetime) average (still very good, but not excellent) it's almost glaring...on the other hand, Bonds will probably go over .300 (lifetime) if he has a .330 plus batting average next season.

And both will be in their 40's...

I agree though, Rice is one of a kind.

8. not to mention
that his grandstanding with each dinger, followed by a strut that would put any cock-'o-the-walk to shame, simply disgust people. It's ugly and it has no place in baseball. Bonds does not carry a team. He's not even a team player. He's no one special, not for his bball career.

6. It’s so unanimously Rice...
but truly, isn’t there one Bond's believer who can kick ass and say differently?

The man is the only player to hit OVER 500 HR's and have OVER 500 SB's, as he will...(perhaps until A-Rod is finished!)

7. depends what type of impact you mean
If you mean a negative impact, there's no question. It's Bonds hands-down.

11. Bonds has HUGE impact
He's single-handedly caused millions of baseball fans to NEVER watch a Giants game because he's....

The MOST OBNOXIOUS athelete in the history of sports, bar none, nada , zip.

12. Agreed, I hope they exile him like they did Rose.
Plus Rice is probably the greatest receiver the game has seen, whereas Bond's isn't that unique.

13. exile
could very well happen, since I believe with every conviction that Bonds is using the Bill Romanowski's school of "Better performance through inventive chemistry."

9. Bonds, no doubt
Rice was a good receiver on great teams.

Bonds is in a league by himself. Perhaps the greatest player on some pretty good and several awful teams.

I don't like him, but he's amazing.

10. Rice. It's a shame he and Emmitt Smith won't be retiring in the uniforms
of the teams they did so much to make the dominant one their decade.Forty Niners the 80s,Cowboys the 90s.
