A long time ago, there was a wedding........
Here is some of what was said on that bright sunny June day......

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. You

shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. Ay,

you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.

But let there be spaces in your togetherness.

And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Thirty spokes will converge/In the hub of a wheel;

But the use of the cart/Will depend on the part

Of the bowl that is void.

With a wall all around/A clay bowl is molded;

But the use of the bowl/Will depend on the part

Of the bowl that is void.

So advantage is had/From whatever is there;

But usefulness rises/From whatever is not.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love;

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.

For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.

And stand together yet not too near together;

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,

And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

1. This is so beautiful Peggy!
Was this for your own wedding?

Who wrote it?

I could almost visualize spirits of love, floating in a surreal whisper of a cloud, while I read it!

Thank you for sharing this. :hug:

2. My dear KC2!
Yes, all these verses were for my own wedding....

Some of it was by Khalil Gibran, in his book "The Prophet."

Other parts were from Lao-Tsu, a Chinese philosopher.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed this!

3. You are so well-read...
I did go to a book store today...and bought Elizabeth Edwards' new book. Glad I went this evening, too, because it was the last one. Guess there are more Democrats than I thought in this area!

You might want to pick up a copy of "The Prophet."

It is easily Gibran's most famous work, and justly so......

I have loved it for a very long time.........
