Anyone know anything about temp agencies?
I have just moved to Florida and have been told by TWO temp agencies that I "don't meet their core requirements".

I am smart, pretty, and have plenty of customer service, data entry, and managerial experience in my reume. My last job was a temp-to-hire, so it's not as if I have been found unemployable by temp agencies in the past.

Am I overeducated? (a doctorate, but not in any practical field, which is why I'm looking for a temp job)

Is it Florida? (Jacksonville to be precise, which in the six weeks I've lived here has proven itself to be completely unwelcoming, cruel, and malicious. Yes, I realize cities are not sentient beings. I'm just sayin'.)

Am I, indeed, unemployable? Specifically unemployable for crappy eight dollar an hour clerical tasks that chimps could probably perform?

1. Sorry, but, Florida in 2006 is pretty bad to get good jobs on the fly.
Teachers, doctors, lawyers..sure...I know all three that relocated.
Temps though, tough sled. Good luck!

2. what kind of temp agency are you going to?
Are you looking at a professional temp agency (like for accountants or marketing professionals) or are you looking at a temp agency for office support (clerical etc). If it's the latter, and you can't do office support (powerpoint, excel, word) and type well, then you are not fitting their core requirements.

3. That's odd.
I worked as a temp between jobs a number of times and never had any trouble with getting placed. Perhaps as the other poster stated, the unemployment is so bad that they are only considering the very "cream of the crop" so to speak. (Or at least to them).

Which ones did you go to? In my experience I found that I had better luck (and treatment) with some over others. Manpower was snotty to me. Olsten and Kelly both treated me very nicely. So it might just be you haven't gone to the right agency yet. Good luck and don't give up.

4. I've worked for a lot of different agencies
Usually I have no problem finding work, but I've had to take jobs that I was over qualified for at times.

5. What are their core requirements?
If you don't know, call up and ask.
