I applied for a job earlier this week. I've been wanting to get out of my retail management job because of the hours - too many nights and weekends - and because, well, I just hate it. My problem is, I can't afford a pay cut, and my level of experience wouldn't command my salary in any other career that I would be interested in.
I saw a job posting this week for a retail job that had regular M-F 8-5 hours. This would have been perfect, as it would have allowed me to command the same salary but have my nights and weekends free to pursue other interests or go back to school for my Master's.
I typed up my resume and cover letter, and then, since my laptop has been randomly dropping letters, I triple-checked each. Then I wrote an email, attached the cover letter and resume to it, and sent it out.
I got a call today from the hiring manager. She said out of 60 resumes she received, there were only two people she wanted to talk to, and I was one of them. She said my resume and cover letter were perfect, and my qualifications were exactly what she was looking for.
However, she said she couldn't offer me a position right now. It seems that my laptop had dropped 2 letters from the e-mail I sent, an "r" and an "s". The dropped letters formed new words, so spell check didn't catch it, and neither did I. So she called me to let me know, essentially, that I could have had the job if I hadn't been so careless in my e-mail. (She said she tried to talk the VPs into interviewing me anyway, to no avail.)
So I remain trapped in a job I hate due to my carelessness. I am my own Judas.
Thanks. I just had to get this off my chest.
