Poll question: What do you wear to work?
If I had my way I wouldn’t wear anything but a t-shirt, shorts & flip flops. Unfortunately its business casual for me on work days.

1. Depends On The Day Of The Week
Per company dress code:

Mon - Thur: Dress shirt, tie, dress slacks.

Fri: Casual shirt (with collar), casual pants - no jeans, no sneakers.

2. Very close to that for me
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 03:40 PM by GOPisEvil
Mon - Thur: dresss shirt, tie, slacks or khakis.
Friday - JEANS DAY!!!! :bounce: Either a shirt with a collar or a sweater. We might be able to get away with sneakers, but I don't wear them. Sometimes, I wear khakis and a polo shirt.

If I worked for a different part of the agency, I'd have a MUCH more relaxed dress code. x(

17. Best part of my job...
is when I go out in the field to do audit work I actually get to dress down. The dress code on our facility campuses is much more relaxed than at central office. We wear jeans a lot, especially it we're gonna be on the dorms, so we fit in with the correctional officers. Less intimidating.

4. Unofficial tech uniform

  • clean black jeans or cords
  • open neck long sleeve dress shirt
  • black leather jacket (it gets cold in the server room)
  • runners (for running between buildings when the network's down)
  • white socks
  • cell phone
  • ID tag
  • black briefcase jammed with network gear and laptop

They gave up expecting us to wear suits because of the amount of time spent crawling under desks and on server room floors.

11. right on tech
but my conservative company still made us wear dress shirts and ties where I co-oped last summer.

You know why? because some stupid tech wore sandals and tie die shirts (it wasn't me) and employees feel confident when a tech is dressed professionally

28. Sandals and Tiedyes Are Fine Here
> sandals and tie die shirts

That's what I'm wearing at work right now.
The pants are tiedyed too.
My hair is halfway down my back.
Nobody has ever had a problem with any of this.

I've even done my last couple of job interviews in tiedyes.
They went a helluvalot better than the ones where I tried to
follow "the rules" on dressing for such occasions.

> employees feel confident when a tech is dressed professionally

"Dressing professionally" varies with the profession. Wearing a
suit to work in our industry implies that one is a manager or wannabe,
and probably NOT all the technical. Real software engineers
don't wear coats and ties to work.

There was Bloom Country cartoon about this topic some few years ago.

24. Same as Trogl...
mostly cords or jeans that aren't blue and sweater sets for me, with comfortable shoes. On Fridays and during school vacations (I work for a school district), blue jeans are okay, and not-too-casual shorts during summer. I prefer not to wear t-shirts at work...makes us look too much like the high-school kids.

26. Back in the boom days for IT
I worked for a company that wanted all the field techs to wear dress pants. Fortunately, they needed us more than we needed them so we just ignored the policy and wore jeans.

jeans (usually with holes in them but not to be cool, just because I am THAT poor), T-shirt, some times a sweatshirt if it's cold.

8. A uniform
In some ways, it is nice not to worry what I wear to work. On the otherhand, there are many days that I wish I could wear nicer clothes. Of course, they'd get ruined anyway as I found with my shirts before we went to uniforms. It's hard to feel professional when you wear a uniform that is all one non flattering color.

13. That amorphous middle ground...
between business casual and business formal. Makes it jus tthat much harder to figure out what to wear in the morning.

When we're having Board meetings or other big meetings we ramp up to business formal. During the summer and on Fridays we can wear jeans. The rest of the time it's "dress nice". Whatever that means.

Today I have on a black velvet shirt, black slacks, and black Mary Jane's with big chunky heels. Seems to work.

We run a business from the house. I do the adminstrative assistant stuff and all of the email and web work. Outings (meaning getting out of the car) include going to the grocery store and the dump. One day I actually contemplated putting on eyeliner and mascara and a pair of real pants to go to the transfer station...Nah!!

How the heck is it a gay guy w/ a comp sci degree gets to represent the blue collar faction?

I wear heavy duty T's or light denim
decent weight jeans ('cause the light stuff dosen't last a full month)
and RedWings (steel toe and shank)

For various ocasions you can add to that:
thermals
raingear
a field jacket
or even insulated coveralls
