Tailgating does not make me go faster
It actually makes me go SLOWER, because it pisses me off that you think that by barreling up on my ass you can bully me into doing what you want. Do you like it when I drop from 55 to 40? You don't, huh? Then you should have minded your manners and the safety laws, jerko. I'm not getting a ticket nor putting my life in jeopardy because you want to get somewhere 1.3 minutes sooner.

So, screw you... and double that for when you tailgate under the following conditions: 1.) I'm already going over the speed limit, and 2.) we're on an interstate and YOU CAN EASILY PASS ME.

2. As long as you're not preventing someone from passing you
on the left, yet another safety law, we have no problems.

9. Why would I do that? Then it wouldn't be tailgating
I'm talking about TAILGATERS.

You didn't make it clear what lane you were in.

17. Tailgaiting is tailgaiting no matter which lane you're in.

4. Tailgating makes me drunk.
I loves me some good tailgating, which, by the way, is quickly becoming a lost art.

14. I am not a violent person.... however
Sometimes I wish I had rear-mounted machine guns on my car... or some cool little "Q" gadgets ala James Bond.

7. So long as you're not in the left lane for no reason
Or going wayyy below the speed limit, yes! I completely agree. I won't go passive agressive and slow down, but I sure as fuck won't speed up to suit some jackass.

13. As I said up thread, I'm talking about tailgaters
Not me going 50 in the left lane or going under the speed limit.

BUT, if someone is going under the speed limit, people still have no right to tailgate. PLus it's illegal.

I don't consider it being passive aggressive, I consider it finding back against a bully.

16. Just making a general comment about tailgating, not directed at you
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 08:11 PM by jpgray
 Sorry.

But I still say that "fighting back" in most driving situations is just a waste of everybody's time--may as well just act the same way you always would. Knowing a driver who is extremely uncourteous, they do sometimes get a charge out of any reaction even if that reaction is to their positive disadvantage.

19. I find it makes me feel all warm and tingly, so that's why I do it
I give them a chance to back off, but as soon as I can't see their grill anymore... I let the needle start creeping down... they get the hint. When they back off, I go back up to speed.

12. I'm with you..
... and no, I never drive in the left lane unless I'm part of the fastest traffic. Even if the fastest traffic is well over the speed limit. :)

18. you're not following Mid-Atlantic tradition
Drive as slow as you feel like in the far left lane, and never move over, even if 50 cars pile up behind you. Force them to become "aggressive drivers" to get around you. Drive side by side with people from other lanes without budging, thereby effectively blocking the entire freeway.

21. THis is quite common
I drive from PA to NYC often, and I can't believe the douchebags who do that. Yes, I'll tailgate their ass until they fucking get back in the right lane. Assholes. There's a flow on highways, and the flow would be more or less undisturbed if it weren't for these absolute shitbags. They sit in the left lane, not a care in the world, forcing everybody to pass them on the right (talk about creating a dangerous situation). Fuck the rear mounted machine guns. I want the front mounted, for these assholes. Blech.

Slower traffic should drive in the right lanes, IMHO.

23. Yeah. I generally slow down.
Unless my wife is in the car. Then, I keep more of an eye on the traffic behind me so I can pre-empt someone tailgaiting me and be out of their way.

I'll slow down even more because it just...well...

Because I can.

I Hate when people try and push me into doing something I don't want to. I'm stubborn that way.

26. try suddenly, lightly tapping on your brakes a few times
Not enough to actually stop the car or create danger, just enough to put a little fear 'o' god in 'em.

And of course there's the classic act like a total psycho and disturb them, ya know: wildly gesticulating, talking to your rearview mirror, pretending to pick things out of your hair and eat them, etc...or if you have anyone in the back seat, see if you can get them to turn around and give a good creepy leer (my brother has this down to a science).

Yes, I'm just the teeniest bit sadistic, and I like having fun with the assholes.
