I would do a poll, but there are too many countries to name and I would surely offend someone if I only listed 10 nations. So this will be an open-ended poll.

My 2nd favorite nation would probably be Italy.

12. on that note
pre-america 1000... hmmm... but back then, the himalayas were not so screwed up, so probably i'd prefer the high alpine valleys of the hindu kush.

Seriously, my favorite country is Atlantis. It sunk... so i'm stuck in an overpopulated ignorant world thousands of years later... and i still remember those glistening towers, and the temples of light.... ;-)

28. One day I want to visit Sweden...
My mom went a few years ago, and found the home my great-great grandfather built. My great grandmother was born there. 120 years and a few alterations later, it was still in good shape. The owners even invited Mom and my aunt inside for coffee.

As thanks for her kindness, they sent a copy of an old family photo taken in front of the house in the late 1880s.

Since when is America my favorite country?

I don't know, really. Perhaps Canada. Of course, lazy me has never been out of the country, so I really shouldn't be saying anything...

9. Canada tops my list.
Also (in no particular order) Scotland, Italy, England, Germany, and Mexico. I'd like to say Australia, but I'll reserve judgement until I can scrape up the funds for the airfare.

Didn't like South Korea. No sir. Not at all.

11. Canada!
My family is mostly Canadian so perhaps I'm biased but Canada is so much more "free" than today's Amerika I have to admit my admiration for this great country. Plus, they invented Hockey, the only sport worth watching ;)

BTW: the constraints change nothing ;-)

15. New Zealand!
They actually have a government position of "Official Wizard" :)

Iceland, and any of the Scandanavian countries also seem very cool. Aside from having a good mix of socialism and capitalism, they always seem to get the cool gadgets and innovations years before we do.

I think they are wrong in applying modern western standards to a very different culture.

An article explaining the whole mess.

but the coolest thing I have read about Italy is it's anarchist movement and their squats.

In America, squats are mainly crackhouses. In Italy, people take over abandoned buildings and turn them into centers of art, music and culture. They have even been known to gain approval and support from local government.

26. Canada, France, Mexico, India
Hey--

Just yesterday morning I left Canada so it tops my list. It's like a mirror image in which the flaws are edited out. Could not tell by listening to them that folks were not USAmericans. But they were sane, balanced, and entirely anti-Bush.

Mexico's architecture, France's art, and India's spirituality put them in my list along with Canada's political culture.

CYD

PS-- the Dominican Republic is very worthwhile to visit
