Any Good Progressive-Minded Women Out There?
As a resident of the still-rusty Cleveland Metro area, unless I'm not looking in the right places, it seems to me that our singles scene here is dead, or very close to it. I'm curious to know where all the intellectual, socially and politically minded single women are, in Cleveland or elsewhere.

Anyway, I'm a single, 25 year-old, 6'2, average-build, politically and socially active, aspiring social studies teacher who is out to challenge and reshape our world for the better...

1. How progressive are you, LOL?

Are you just right of Green, or do you feel kindly toward...say, Al Gore?

Also, have you tried taking up a hobby? (Ugh, LOL, I hate saying that, but honestly, I keep hearing that it's a good way to meet people.)

I'm around your age, but I'm in Jersey and have a young child (which is male for "run away! run away!"). There are lots of us progressive gals over here, but there are probably lots of cute young things in Ohio--let's just hope they're all not College Republicans! Yikes!

Good luck!

2. Unfortunately, speaking as a single parent in the Cleveland area,
I can tell you that he's right, the singles scene sucks and that the majority of singles in the area are conservative repukes. And when you do meet liberals/progressives they're usually married or "seriously involved."

3. Isn't Drew Carey from Cleveland?
Still, you've also got Halle Berry (yumyumyum) and Arsenio Hall. I'm sorry that things aren't more hopeful there - still, it only takes one to be The Right One. I hope he comes along at just the right time.

4. Isn't that true everywhere?
Feels like it to me, too.

6. You know, it really depends.

tjdee,

I am a registered Democrat and confidently voted for Gore in 2000, fully believing that he was destined to continue President Clinton's reign of good will and prosperity (even though Ohio's electoral votes actually went to Bush). Who knew he'd blow his home state of Tennessee, setting the stage for the Bushmen to do their dirty work in Florida? Not that Nader actually had a chance.

Until Bush, Cheney and co. started wreaking havoc, I was simply left of center. Since 9/11, more and more, I feel like a revolutionary radical, wishing there were others who would be willing to take to the streets en masse and take matters back into their own hands to save this country, our world and all of our futures from greedy, soulless and morally bankrupt oil and arms men turned politicians. That might make me a radical left-winger, but I don't feel that either the Greens or the present Dems in power really have the guts to challenge the Neo-Con GOP and carry our country back to the future.

As far as a potential mate goes, I don't think her actual political views should matter too much, although I find it somewhat difficult to believe that a truly open-minded, deep-thinking, intelligent individual would even consider themselves to be a Republican by present-day definition.

I do have a few hobbies, but the ones I have don't usually put me in the midst of a large group of people. And when I am, the people surrounding me are ususally much older with families.

Single parenthood isn't necessarily an interest-killer for me. Although a past experience with a single mom girlfriend didn't end on a positive note, I realize that I can't judge all by one.

Thanks for your well wishing :)

EDIT: Added first line (ATTN to tjdee)

SECOND EDIT: I will respond to others here. Just too tired to do it tonight.

5. First, look around you.
If you are in college, go to meetings of the Young Democrats and mix. If you are in the job market, go to meetings of local Democrats and mix. You have several things going against you, though: first, it is my observation that the really cool people are now considering themselves to be Republicans. Before people flame me, let me explain:
I am a teacher, 53 years old, at a local university. Students in my classes, and I teach the liberal arts (ha ha) are really not political at all. So those who tend to gravitate to "join" in usually say they are Republican, because right now, like it or not, Republican is "in." This doesn't mean all of them are really republicans. They just are foolish enough to think that it is "cool" to be one.
Now. That said, I think you should look at your life. If you are hanging out at places that attract these people, you are definitely in need of a change.
Seek out the alternative bars. Go to the Unitarian Church instead of the Baptist. Go to art exhibits and concerts.
If you do all this and it doesn't work, then look at yourself. Do you need a make-over? Do you exude Republican vibes??? (LOL).

I hope you find some Left-Wing women!
