What is the best radio show?
What's your favorite radio program and why? historical radio is welcome. I'll start.

This American Life.

Listening to Ira is one of the only opportunites I get to relax and be a little introspective. I look forward to This Americal Life as an adult much like I would anticipate Saturay morning cartoons or Christmas as a kid. Every act is a labrynth of raw human truth and I really appreciate that. Great show!

1. A Prairie Home Companion
2 hours of escape a week for me. I love the "News from Lake Wobegon" and the artist you wouldn't normally hear on mainstream radio.

2. you know, I used to really be disturbed
by Garrison's mouth-breathing, but he's really been growing on me lately. I'm finding him soothing in a grandfatherish sort of way.

I agree, A Prairie Home Companion is a truly great variety show! Good call.

19. I always thought it was comforting.
I've been a listener since I was a little kid, almost 20 years. And his "mouth-breathing" as you call it, lowers my blood pressure.

purely because I love stealing my nasty neighbors wifi bandwidth!

12. Oh, I wasnt listening,
I had it muted!
Im serious about stealing their bandwidth, the neocon bastards hate me because of my education (and therefor inferred, however correct, political affiliations), so I dont ever bother to worry about slowing down their online credit card donation to pat robertson or their subscription renewal to soldier of fortune.

Jerks.

:)

7. The Rachel Maddow Show
I love Rachel. She does straight news, with a liberal slant. The show is informative and entertaining. I subscribe to Air America Premium just so I never miss one of her shows.

15. A local radio show with this guy Ed Norris.
http://1057freefm.com/pages/1304.php

He talks about everything, but talks a lot about politics. He's about as close to a real centrist as I've ever seen, but he's intellectually honest about every issue. He's on the left for some things, and on the right for others. He does not like Bush, the war, or the many other things that make up the biggest problems we face right now.

It's nice that he's not a talking head, for either the right or the left. I guess that's what I like most about him.

18. Hmmm... a toughie....
It's not really a single show, nor a particular radio station. But I do miss the radio output from the BBC domestic services.

Over here we have NPR & Morning Edition - the BBC has "Today" on Radio 4. Radio 4 is basically hard news, without fluff and without pulling any punches. Journalists actually ask bold questions and are quite frank. John Humphreys is my favourite of the lot lately.

I never really followed it but Radio 4 still has a lot of radio shows that are carrying on from literally years. It's the home of the longest running record request show (Desert Island Discs), the longest running radio serial drama (The Archers). There are various comedy shows, quiz shows, drama productions (afternoon plays), phone-in discussions, non-phone in discussions, features... - Radio 4 is a UK institution, and if things ever change with Radio 4 it tends to get talked about in Parliament - like even just changing the time Woman's Hour is on (no there is no Men's Hour), or axing the UK Theme that used to be played at 5:30am (yes that early).

It may be the old radio shows such as the Goon Show (which I've only heard on tape or through repeats). It may be the quiz shows, like Just A Minute. It may be the comedy sketch shows. But the BBC knows how to put on good radio.

If I had to be banished to a desert island, my one luxury I would take would be a radio receiver that could get BBC Radio 4.

Mark.

Greatest Interviewer Ever

I also like Rachel Maddow, and there's a bunch of stuff on Sirius Satellite that I like. Like Radio Classics (Dragnet, The Shadow, etc.), Michelangelo Signorelli on OutQ Gay Radio, and dare I say it? Howard Stern? LOL
