Have YOU ever sunbathed naked in your own backyard?
I'm going to use this topic on a future radio show. Here's the story that prompted the question:

From:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/5014450.stm

Woman allowed to sunbathe naked in Wales

A district nurse has been cleared by a court of indecent exposure after sunbathing naked in her garden.
Lynett Burgess, 55, from Llandyfriog, near Cardigan in west Wales, was filmed by a "shaken" neighbour in July 2005 and was charged by police.

The prosecution at Cardigan Magistrates Court said Ms Burgess's nude sunbathing was "not normal" behaviour.

But magistrates cleared her, adding that it was accepted she did not intend to "cause harm or distress".

5. Are you particularly vulnerable to exposure? Or just not interested in --
the whole idea?

We used to have a delightful backyard swimming pool with a stockade fence around it. We swam naked for a few years in the 1970s.

I know that a few neighbors might be able to see in. But at the time, I didn't care. It was probably a phase when I was much younger -- we don't have the opportunity anymore as we have a small yard and no pool.

Swimming nude under the full moon with a halo of maple trees outlined against the night sky -- it's a vision I won't forget soon!

From former years (with new woolen Cole of California suit, of course) at the Venetian pool, Coral Gables, Florida.

73. To use the parlance of that era, "stacked"
nice figure, though modestly covered.

Truth be told ....
I went to Woodstock at age 17, swam nude with a few hundred of my closest friends over several days, because there were no other bathing facilities available.

My friends and I got back from Woodstock, and for several years swam in the buff at a remote local resevoir. It was the norm rather than the exception.

then things started to get uptight again in the '70s. I did belong to a clothing optional resort in Topanga in the '80s.

but these days, I would scare the neighbors.

I started living with my husband in the summer of 1972. His wife had died of stomach at age 34 in 1971, after 14 years of marriage. His three older children were living with relatives; mine were ages three and two. It all seemed so natural -- swimming with babies who delighted in their little bodies.

When his children moved back to the house in late summer, the older kids took to the pool naked, one by one. They were ages 9, 12 and 14. Even the housekeeper got involved briefly the following year.

Later, I was accused by my stepdaughters of "forcing" them to do this. I have been told by several counselors that it was probably inappropriate for this family at this time, but I really had no clue. I felt I was just "doing what comes naturally."

I should have had an operation for an umbilical hernia when I was a baby. It doesn't bother me, and doctors who have discussed this with me have said not to do it now. Still, since it was never fixed, I'm pretty self-conscious about it.

Besides, now I'm a regular swimmer and one piece suits are the norm in the fitness center pool classes.

How about at night?

One of my fondest memories is being aboard a boat in the Red Sea. We were staying in Eilat and took the trip for the day to Taba, Egypt.

The German women on board all took off their tops. The men from other nations gawked, but said nothing.

I moved to a protected part of the boat and doffed my top, also. My husband was a little surprised, to say the least!

From circa 1955:

It's gravity, and it's our enemy in a lot of ways.

Gypsy Rose Lee, the former stripper, said it best.

Her retort? "I have everything I used to have. It's all just a little bit LOWER."

Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 10:50 AM by Radio_Lady
That might explain it. My son has that combination, and he can tan. But he doesn't get as dark as my daughter, who has brown eyes and brown skin. Folks used to think she was Puerto Rican or Cuban when we lived in Miami.

Blue-eyed blondes and redheads are at the greatest risk.

13. This reminds me of another story
One where a guy was either walking around his own home naked or was "observed" by nosy neighbors masturbating or something.

Whatever it was, his neighbors video taped it and they brought the poor guy up on charges. The judge threw out the complaints of indecent exposure by saying "the guy has every right to be naked in his own house" and then he slapped the prosecutor/nosy neighbors with a fine and jail time for violating a voyeurism law.

Personally, if you're on your own property and are taking care not to be in public view (backyard, privacy fences, etc.), I think you should be allowed to get as nude as you want to. I've gone skinny dipping a few times in backyard pools and hot tubs, nobody died.

I don't "get" people that have hangups about nudity in the first place. I mean, I understand if you don't want your kids looking at someone walking naked in public down the sidewalk. That just might downright embarrass someone.

But seriously, people that try to cover up statues of nudes or deny funding to the arts because of nudity as a subject matter are just strange creatures. They think that because nudity makes themselves uncomfortable, that it makes everyone else uncomfortable, too. Wrong.

I live in a resort town with over 60 miles of beach (including one clothing optional beach only accessible by boat), and I can tell you many of the people I see every day on the beachfront might as well be naked. I've seen more cotton in aspirin bottles than in some bikinis.

42. Well stated. My mother was pretty prudish. I just went the other
way growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. Now I have a daughter who is very traditional. Wonder what my granddaughter will be like?

Author Midge Decter wrote a book called "Liberal Parents, Conservative Children" or something like that. Her conclusion was that this sort of thing can jump by a generation.

My aunt (my mother's younger sister) was a flaming liberal and very sensual in her youth. She was born in 1925. So maybe it's not just an age or relationship thing.

Remember the brouhaha with John Ashcroft being pictured in front of a Washington statue with breasts? He ordered it covered up.

Yeah, the John Ashcroft episode was what I was thinking of, but I couldn't remember his name. I'm so bad with names.

Most of my immediate family are progressive. We have extended family members that are severely conservative (John Birch society types) but i'm not really sure of their views on nudity. I don't really communicate with that part of the family, and they don't with me.

I guess i'll never get out to the nude beach on Bird Island near us. I'm not supposed to be out in the sun anyway as I have a skin condition that magnifies my chances of contracting skin cancer.

However, I was a streaking demon at night when I was a teenager. My parents had a nice 12 seater in ground concrete Jacuzzi in their backyard at the time, and I wound up in it with more than one girlfriend stark naked. And of course, in college, the campus was located very close to a lake. It felt like the whole dorm would get drunk and skinny dip on the weekends. It was the thing to do, after all.

15. Does it count if I was three?
:D

I used to run around naked a lot as a kid in the summer time.

I wouldn't do that now because:

1) I have neighbors. They have a good view of my yard on the backside.

2) There are too many cars passing on the streetside.

I think about the only place I'd sunbathe nude is at a clothing optional beach here (There's a place on the Outer Banks) or in Europe. Europeans don't make a big deal about nudity at all.

20. Cute. Our granddaughter used to cavort naked on our back lawn.
That was when she was three or four.

Now that she's eight years old, forget it.

Kids get so "body image" sensitive at such a young age. It's kind of sad. Europeans have it right, at least on this frontier. In the United States, we're still positively Puritanical on this issue, in my humble opinion.

In peace,

The cat bit his thumb and hubby had to have treatment for "cat scratch fever." The owner euthanized him (he had been mistreated as a kitten by several roommates) because this was not the first time.

where the neighbor was just so shaken up about it that they went to get a camera to film it. That cracks me up.

I wouldn't necessarily want my neighbors parading around naked where I can see, but if they're lying in their back yard, it's easy enough to just look away, rather than going to the trouble of video taping them and turning them in. I'd rather have naked neighbors sunbathing than loud music, dogs barking all hours, and all the other annoyances that bad neighbors bring.

27. Kinda, sorta..
In our younger years at our first home, we had a pool surrounded by a privacy fence and large bushes. We didn't sun bathe but did swim in the buff in the moonlight a few times.

I wouldn't dream of it here..my neighbors can tell me who uses the bathroom first in the morning. I still haven't figured out how they know. Our windows are covered well with drapes and blinds.

I have seen a few naked neighbors in my time. At the first home, my airing deck faced the neighbors airing deck..a few hundred feet separated us. The neighbor man had the habit of standing at his airing deck door in the buff.

Here, I stopped sitting on the porch for about a year or so in the evenings. I love to look out at the country fields across the street..but there is also a house directly in view. I was friends with the elderly lady who lived there and then her son moved back in for a while. He would undress in front of the window with the lights on and the curtains wide open.

...wonder what else a lineman sees while on duty? Never thought of this angle before, although the Con Edison workers used to whistle at me when I rode my bike to work in NYC in the 1960s. Remember, we rode in the outfit we wore to work, usually relatively short skirts, nylon stockings and high heeled shoes. Sneakers were for kids at play and adult casual dress was practically unknown. No one had lockers or showers at their offices in those days.

Our neighbors are pretty far away and never home during the day, so they wouldn't be an issue really. Unfortunately, my grandmother is always around. I'm just waiting for her to go to Pittsburgh on vacation, then I'll be sunbathing nude. Maybe even out the strap marks a bit.

59. Bravo for you! Lots of places in Hawaii and Florida -- I even think
there is one beach where I used to swim that's been converted into a nude beach.

Haulover Beach, Florida

JUST NORTH OF world-renowned Bal Harbour in Miami Beach is a model clothing-optional urban beach. Attracting visitors worldwide, Haulover County Park offers over a half-mile of pure white sand and seashore, with parking, trash cans, concessions, restrooms, lifeguards, and signage for the clothing-optional section. This may be the most beautiful clothing-optional beach in the U.S., and the most heavily used.

Directions: From I-95, exit at Golden Glades Interchange on to State Rd., 826 east or go east on 125th St. Find Haulover County Park at about 150th St. on Collins Ave. (Route A1A) and park in the northernmost lot. Walk to the beach through the tunnel underpass. "Parking: Parking lot with fee; recommended arrival by 11:00 a.m.

50. I had a friend who sun bathed naked all over the country.
He had a special thing for nude beaches, etc, as he was well endowed as they say.

He died.

Of melanoma.

The worst thing about sun bathing is not offending anyone. The worst thing is that it's bad for you. Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the country.

I hate to rain on the parade, but that needs saying.

Going to court over something like this is really idiotic; a chat should always suffice to solve such conflicts.

And, yup: I am really in Berlin, at the northern end of what usually is considered "central".

Anyway, I have to admit: the situation here can be a bit embarrassing. It is among the first things visitors notice and one of the most persistent parts of trip reports.

63. Hello, Shine. We did see the Da Vinci Code the Saturday after
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 02:25 PM by Radio_Lady
it opened. We paid 12.50 POUNDS EACH to see it in London. (Expensive, considering that we usually go to films for FREE.)

I wasn't that impressed either, but my husband had read the book and got more out of it than I did.

PS. They were filming "Spiderman III" in front of the Manhattan Hilton Club on Sixth Avenue -- a second unit crew was there for about three days. What a madhouse! Temperatures were in the 70s and 80s and the extras had to wear winter clothes. There was a stunt double for "Spiderman" -- no actual known actors, but the crowds watching were immense.

I'm looking forward to "Superman Returns" scheduled to open on June 28th. The trailer is quite a production.

Nice to hear from you. Have a great week!

In peace,

69. No, the longest lasting burn I ever got
Was when I bought a high cut bottom and low cut top bikini. I went down South for spring break. Because we checked out of our hotel early, we spent the late morning, early afternoon on the beach. Even though I used sufficient high SPF sunscreen, my breasts and "bikini area" burned. They had never received sun exposure before. It was very red and painful but didn't blister. The color difference lasted months even though I didn't expose that area again.
There is no fence in our yard and we are on a street of duplexes. About half of them are occupied by families with children and most of the rest are occupied by older people.

70. I never sunbathe, I burn instantly, but yes, I have been naked outdoors.
I'll never figure out those "shaken" people who go out of their way to take pictures of their naked neighbors and call it evidence.

When I was seventeen a mob of us playfully decided to go to a nude beach. Look at that! Incredibly awkward and self conscious math-science geeks gone wild! At that age I was the most clueless creature you'd ever meet, and I didn't have many friends, but I went along with them. There were girls, so I had to.

Most of the girls simply took off their tops and ran around in the shallow water splashing one another, but most of the guys quickly stripped and headed straight for the deep cold Pacific water, myself included, scared to death of any noticeable activity occurring in our normally covered regions.

So there we were, all the guys treading water in the waves, and all the girls taunting us to join them on the beach. Eventually some of us came out, but only after the cold water had gotten to us.

Strangely, one of the kids who'd come with us didn't take his clothes off. Instead he sat down on the rocks and watched. It was creepy. He probably works for the NSA these days.

77. I've moonbathed naked in other people's backyards. Does that count?
I don't sunbathe. I burn under incandescent lights. The sun and I have a long history of injunctions, restraining orders and abusive conversations.

Our back yard is also open to the rest of the neighborhood. While I'm growing my roses and lilacs as quick as I can to form a hedge, we don't yet have it, and I refuse to do the wooden privacy fence thing because they look so bloody tacky. Every new house in this area has them, and I hate them. They just define a degree of self-interest and self-absorption to which I won't subscribe. I am not going to shut myself off from the rest of my neighborhood with ugly pieces of dead wood when I can, with some patience, grow some carbon sinks that perfume the air and beautify my property and the world around us.

But I've been other places where I could and did.

Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 11:36 AM by Radio_Lady
We have the tacky cedar privacy fencing but it does serve a purpose. We're living in a big home on a small lot. That's the way it's currently done here in Portland, Oregon.

Prior to that, and for the better part of thirty years, we lived on almost an acre in the Boston area, with a backyard pool, stockade fencing (required by law) around it, and big maple and pine trees. It became too expensive to do the upkeep and we did it ourselves. I'm glad we don't have to toil as hard on our property now that we're retired.

79. No, because
a) I don’t sunbathe. My attention span is too short to just sit out in the sun doing nothing.
b) My neighbors could see. I don’t care if people see my body but that should be their choice. I have no qualms about social nudity and enjoy things like skinny dipping, hot tub parties and nudist resorts where all the participants don’t mind being naked and seeing others naked.

Plus, I'd still be embarrassed.

And I still sunburn.
