Anyone here watch "Sin City"? (SPOILERS)
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 06:37 AM by Starbucks Anarchist
I just caught it on DVD -- really interesting flick.

I was familiar with the graphic novels it's based upon, but was totally unprepared for the absolutely amazing look of the movie. I'm generally not a fan of the green screen movies, but this one worked out really well.

Even though the look of the movie is somewhat "cartoonish" (because it looks almost exactly like the source material), the juxtaposition of violent imagery was very effective, too.

It was also great to see a lot of major (and minor) stars together in an ensemble piece, and I particularly liked Mickey Rourke's performance as "Marv." It's like he was born to play that role. Also, Elijah Wood and Nick Stahl were excellent in VERY creepy roles.

I almost felt sorry for Stahl's character ("Yellow Bastard") in a certain scene at the end that male viewers of the film (like myself) really winced at.

Stylistically, this movie was off the charts. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that "looked" as good as this. The dialogue was almost all taken directly from the graphic novels, which might explain the few instances of awkward delivery by the actors, though that was a minor nuisance.

I was confused by the beginning and ending scenes, though. Josh Hartnett's character kills Marley Shelton's character, then he reappears at the very end of the movie, apparently ready to kill Alexis Bledel's character.

While I know that the first scene was based on a short story from the graphic novels and the last scene was added especially for the film, I don't understand either scene's relevance to the whole movie. The only explanation I can think of is that it has something to do with the sequel coming out next year.

Anyway, still a very entertaining film. What did you guys think?

2. I loved it.
I thought Elijah Wood was great.

If I remember from the DVD extras correctly, the first scene was a test piece to see if the cinematography would work, and it worked so well that they wanted to include it in the movie.

3. The first scene was shown to Frank Miller.
Robert Rodriguez said if Miller liked it, Rodriguez would make the whole movie. It was based on a short story from the Sin City universe that Miller had written years before.

But I'm still trying to figure out its relationship with the rest of the movie. Even though there are three separate vignettes in the movie, they all loosely tie together, but the first scene doesn't, and the last scene is open to interpretation.

And Elijah Wood's vacant look in his eyes is fucking creepy. :D
