Is Triple Sec the same as Orange Curaçao?
I need to make my bourbon balls and have always used Orange Curaçao. I can't find it, only Triple Sec. When I first figured out the recipe, I used Grand Mariner, which is great, but too darn expensive.

They also had a tangerine brandy I thought might work.

Any suggestions?

1. Well, 3Sec is an orange liqueur
Just like curacao. I'd think it would be a decent substitute. I use both when I make margaritas.

2. Cool, thanks!
I'm a beer/ale drinker myself so, aside from G&T's, don't know much about booze.

3. No
Triple Sec is dryer and what should be used in margaritas:
1/2 tequila
1/4 lime juice from limes
1/4 triple sec

Chill glasses and salt rims.

4. That's interesting...
Wonder how it would do in the bourbon balls? Probably be just fine.

5. It'll be fine in the bourbon balls, -
curacao is made from the dried peel of bitter oranges. Triple sec is a double distillate of oranges, lemons and curacao. Both have an orange flavour, but the triple sec will be a bit more 'orangey' and a bit more intense. Big flavour is not a bad thing in a bourbon ball. :hi:

7. Cool...
I grate orange peel in them -- orange, chocolate, and bourbon. Yum. Okay, tomorrow night I'm rollin'!

6. No, but you should pour both of them down the drain anyway

and use Cointreau. Not only better tasting, it's not filled with cheapass impurities like triple sec and curacao taht will help you earn a hangover.

If you're gonna put something in your body, put in something nice.

Go with Cointreau. Makes a mighty fine margarita.

And serve your margaritas straight or on the rocks - I think they're more enjoyable that way. :-)

Though for your bourbon balls, the grand marnier is an excellent option. Tangerine brandy might work. Also what might work is mostly plain brandy, with just a splash of the curacao.

8. Yes
Curacao is better, more expensive. Grand Marnier is a tad sweet for margaritas.

10. Both Cointreau and Grand Marnier are too expensive....
for the bourbon balls. For drinking, they're great. I think I'll got with Triple Sec -- especially since I can't find curaçao.

11. I agree about the Cointreau, Rabrrrrrr
if you're going to drink it. But she's looking for an inexpensive way to get an orange flavouring into her bourbon balls. Triple sec is fine.

12. Yes, I realized that after I posted
hence the little add-on paragraph at the end of my post. And I confused it all again by thinking she had curacao, when she has triple sec. :-)

Not my night for accuracy.
