Forget Bob Hope...Eric Braunn is dead!
Iron Butterfly's guitarist who played the In-A Gadda Da Vida riff. A moment of silence please. I can say unequivically that as a metal head, his contribution to the world had much more of an impact on my life (for better AND worse) than anything Mr. Hope contributed (no offense intended, just my personal opinion).

8. Frank did better
Before the Iron Butterfly, there was "Freak Out".

"The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet", 20 minute musical selection (and I use the term music loosely), of what happens when you turn a bunch of freaks loose on rented percussion equipment

"Help I'm A Rock", best hard rock DaDa before and since

Suzi Creamcheese, honey, what's got into you?

5. Well, if you accept a guy whose last hit was 35 years ago as a "celebrity"
Then thats two.... who's gonna be number three?

The words "Bonzo goes to HELL" come to mind. And I ain't talking John Bonham either....

7. IMHO, one of the funniest Simpsons gags ever
Was when Bart slipped the sheet music to "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" to Mrs Whatshername, the church organist.
John
RIP, dude.

10. I agree....
That was one of the most inspired moments of The Simpsons ever IMO.

Mainly, because I was a church organist in my teens and I had two song requests for a wedding. One was "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" and the other was "Stairway To Heaven". I actually had to demonstrate to the bride why these songs wouldn't work on a church organ. She settled for "Close to You". :puke:

9. My outgoing answering machine message
My roomate and I about 1983 or so had an answering machine with punk rock on the outgoing message. We got a lot of messages from 30-something types complaining about the terrible music.

So we had the outgoing message say:

"We apologize to our friends of an older generation for the punk rock on this machine, and offer instead this great old song from the 60's"

and in the background was In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

11. That was the first LP I ever bought
Had to get an advance on my allowance. Was 9 years old. I loved it and wanted to be Eric when I grew up.

Years later I saw Tom Petty on a tour before Refugee made him a household name. He did something towards the end of the set called "jukebox memories" or something like that. The audience would holler out the name of their first record and the band would play it. He was close enough to hear my cry for Inna Godda Da Vida but just laughed and mumbled that they didn't have 17 minutes for that part of the set...

Damn, that is sad. Flowers and Beads are Everything.
