PBS: Bio on Eugene O'Neill
On American Experience, it's a documentary on O'Neill. It's always great to learn what motivated some of our greatest authors, playrights, poets and other artists. Somehow, it seems to me that the more squalid your upbringing, and the more tragic it is, compels you to be a better writer than those who have had no misery in their lives. I must admit, that when I was younger, and as I had often more bad times, I wrote a lot more than I do now. It has only been in politics now where I find such horrid misery, and instead of writing fiction, I write commentary.

Eugene O'Neill is buried in Jamaica Plain, in Forest Hills cemetery, close to where I lived most of my life.
