Cool and useful or really dorky? You decide.
We go to a lot of events in Chicago, including some concerts on the lawn in Millenium Park. It just gets hard to always be sitting on the ground or standing, so we decided to buy chairs. Instead of opting for the collapsible ones that you stuff inside a bag, we got low-rise folding chairs.

The thing that I really like about them is that they have backpack straps on them, so you carry them just like a backpack and the back of the seats have roomy pouches on them to stuff your gear, like a bottle of wine and picnic supplies.

I showed them to someone and he said they were stupid. Why would you want to walk around with a chair strapped to your back?

My thinking is that it frees your hands and distributes the load to eliminate strain.

So, are these chairs innovative and practical or worthy of being mocked?

The person who mocked you needs to grow up.

3. They didn't mock me
Just said it was a stupid idea. (And, yes, it did come from a 20-something.)

2. Your mocker is a doofus.
Wait, was it Jay? ;)

In any case, let HIM carry chairs around, then. Back straps = good idea.

5. It's hard being on the cutting edge.
This year everyone will be laughing at you. Next year you'll see a ton of them. So, you're a dorky trend-setter with free hands! (And seriously, as one who goes to a fair amount of outdoor concerts, it does sound like a great idea).

6. Souds quite cool and useful to me
How old was the fellow who thought they were stupid? The rest of us, unfortunately, aren't as young as we used to be--anything to make things easier should be welcomed!

10. I think that's what it was
I used to think it was stupid to carry an umbrella. :eyes:

Millenium Park is awesome. We went to a couple of concerts there last summer and spread out on the lawn. The sound system is amazing. It's a little like Ravinia, but less pretentious, although I'm sure we spotted a few transplants -- no candelabras but a few vases of flowers and some china.

:hi:

7. Do you mean the ones they sell at Sportmart?
Edited on Thu Mar-23-06 01:39 AM by Susang
The royal blue ones, with their own little carrying bag? If so, Michael and I own two of them ourselves. Highly practical, especially for someone like me. ;-)

TravelChair® took the shoulder and sternum straps off a backpack, screwed it on a comfy chair and add the bag from a daypack. A great chair for the outdoors. Made with 420D nylon. Polyurethane coated for water resistance. Tubular steel frame for added strength. Size: 25" x 17" x 16.5" open. 22" x 20" x 2.5" closed. Weight 8 lbs. Capacity: 200 lbs.

It was a great deal, only about $40 (for both!) with shipping. They are well-constructed (a tad heavy) and quite comfy, but sit a little lower to the ground.

I would definitely recommend buying them.
