Okay, all of you "Geekier than thou" e-mail wizards...
I've been trying all day to download my e-mail. I've made 6 or 7 attempts and each time the messages keep stalling at message number 19 of 54. It repeatedly downloads 1-18, then shuts down with this message:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop3.email.msn.com', Server: 'pop3.email.msn.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '+OK 244 bytes', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

What's going on? Anybody have a few clues that can help me with this...? I do get a lot of mail from an unusually verbose dude, and it's slowed things down more than a few times in the past, but its never actually stalled the server before.

have you rebooted lately or run your virus scan?

(not really geekier than thou and certainly not a wizard...don't know why I answered :D )

3. Rebooted fer sure, 3 or 4 times today.
Running a virus scan now, but it autoscans all incoming and outgoing mail and auto updates definitions. I'm running one now, but I'm not thinking it's a virus problem, on my end, anyway. The mail is hung up on the server and never downloads.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514

And if that doesn't work try doing a Google search for "Outlook Express" or Outlook (whichever you use)and the error number.

6. Those options were informative, but I don't believe
they're behind the problem. I carriers haven't changed and I don't use broadband. The problem is new and the virus scan system I use has been in place for months. I haven't changed the configuration since I set up mail on this computer. And it's been working fine, and indeed is working fine with the exception of the one piece of mail.

 Will go to Google. Thanks for the help.

8. Also, you may need to delete and reinstall Outlook or OE...
apparently the error may be caused by the program becoming corrupted.

5. Also, it's possible you may have to call customer support and
have them delete #19. That seems to be causing the problem.

17. Your favorite sister-in-law may be sending you 40 of her new digital
camera pics (high resolution) of the thanksgiving feast at her house.

7. Happens to me all the time
My connection just times out. I'll be at #5 of 17 and it just stalls. Look at your account properties (if you're using Outlook Express) and in the "advanced" tab is a section for server timeout. You can adjust it. It defaults to one minute, but you can increase it. MS Outlook is configured almost the same way. Just look at the properties of your e-mail account and under the "advanced" tab you'll find the server timeout settings.

If you're using a web-based app (like Hotmail) check your POP settings and you should find the server timeout. Again, extend it to two minutes and see how it works out.

Good luck!

10. If your ISP supports webmail
you can log onto their webmail page and delete the offending message yourself. Then try downloading again.

I've had this happen with Outlook + Earthlink, and that solution worked for me.

12. That did it!!
Thanks GAspnes!

The offending piece of mystery male was from an unknown source, had no properties available, nothing in the subject line and had no visible text in the message. I suspect it was an attempted assault against my cyber defenses.

16. I really do
I've been fixing broken things since I was a child. Computers are broken almost all the time, so I sort of gravitated to them.

11. Spyware?
It could be some spyware causing the problem, sometimes when I can not connect, I run spybot and then reboot.

Most of the time the problem will be solved.

13. could be one of 2 things that happened to me.
if your on dial-up. a really big file will choke you download.

or, could be your anti-virus program is stopping the d/l.

both these things happened to me. i called my ISP, a local company and they deleted the files for me. problem solved.
