How many refugees do we have here from Salon.com?
I used to read the political boards over there all of the time in 1999 and 2000. It was my first serious introduction into politics. Although I had long toyed with the issues, my awakening came later in life.

I remember that they had some of the smartest, wittiest posters over there. I never did get up the nerve to post over there because I felt so totally outmatched.

So, who here used to frequent the Salon.com boards? Did you post there? If so, what was your screen name? Anybody still go over there?

1. I'm a Salon subscriber ...
but never been to their boards. They seemed too generalized.

2. Used to lurk there
on a regular basis. Some very witty, brilliant people over there, IMO. But TT is so hard to use and navigate, only slightly better than freeperville.

4. Used to read Salon boards
I never liked the setup, though, and eventually gave it up.

5. I loved the White House forum.
I was at Salon for the campaign and the Selection. I left when they went pay to post--and came here to DU. I posted there a fair amount--and there were some amazing folks on that board that made me feel like such a putz in comparison! I see some of them filter thru here from time to time, but I have no idea where a lot of those guys went.

Ferguson Foont opened his own board, Bare Kuckles Politics. I liked Fergy a lot. I used to see Sagle on from time to time, and WBrad was around for a while at Online Journal along with a few of the others. Nancy Waterman and a couple of the other Astrologers were over there--and they have gravitated here to DU.

I really miss guys like Martin Held... He did a huge amount of work on shrub and his AWOL status early on. Most of what we take for granted is work that Marty did.

Funny thing, I actually posted there using my real name... Most of those guys (even if they ever noticed my pathetic attempts to participate!) probably wouldn't recognize the Davsand monniker.

Pax.

Laura

6. Loved the stuff, still subscribe but the boards are messy and obnoxious
and I'm getting annoyed with some of the editorial directions they're going (not that that's a bad thing - a paper isn't doing it's job if fewer than half the readers are pissed at any given point.)

The problem for me is A. LaMott. Deus in Excelsis, that woman annoys me. Don't make me count the ways.

I hit it a couple times a week. But they did make me politically aware when they first started out.

7. used to read (a lot) and post (some)
Also read a bit now.

They seem to have little room for new topics - and DU loses older topics. Some sort of compromise might be nice.

And yes GO MARTY!!!!!!

10. Did you post under this name?
I really thought that there were more former Salon people here. Where did they go? Are any of them over at Bartcop?

14. Just read
They were WAY out of my league. In fact, I didn't start posting here a lot until about February. Still probably out of my depth, but I just don't care. :D

One line of discussion from Salon that really stands out, though, is that when Bush was selected, they started taking bets about how soon we would be in Iraq. I recall thinking to myself, "What are the talking about?!?! IRAQ? They must have their tinfoil on too tight."

Does anyone recall those discussions? Is there any way of getting back to those archives? In light of all that has happened, I think it would be really interesting to take a look at them.

Ever since then, when people post what I think are weird theories or ideas, I'm not so quick to dismiss them. History has proven that much — not all of it good — is possible.

15. Me! I'm sure I remember you from there.

I came across to DU when Maia Cowen started looking for a new home as Salon went to pay-to-post. While I have always thought that the Salon boards were more highbrow and bitingly witty, I could now never say goodbye to my DU family.

On edit: I think I was GregW there, too.

16. Did you see my post #14
Do you recall those discussions or am I just hallucinating? I agree on the more high-brow part. Often, they would make obscure references that I had to look up just so I knew what they were talking about and I'm not exactly illiterate.
