What would be your five "deserted island" discs?
If you were deserted on an island with only five of your favorite albums, what would they be? (doubles count as one)
Mine: 1. Beatles - Revolver 2. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street 3. Smashing Pumpkins - Gish 4. Pink Floyd - The Final Cut, and drum roll please.... 5. The Who - Who's Next.
:silly:

1. Ouch, that's a HARD one!
But, off the top of my head let's go with:

* Spock's Beard - "V"
* Gentle Giant - "Free Hand"
* Supertramp - "Crime of the Century"
* UK - "Danger Money"
* Dream Theater - "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"

Better click <submit> before I change my mind and pick 5 other ones.

3. Hmmm....
"Lateralus" by Tool
"Aenima" by Tool
"Undertow" by Tool
"Rage Against The Machine" by Rage Against the Machine
"Dirt" by Alice in Chains

Those are the first 5 that popped into my head. Of course, it would suck to live with only those 5 albums, and to leave everything else behind...

9. We MUST add classical
Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, etc. Then, "Beggar's Banquet," the Stones; "Sergeant Pepper's," the Beatles; some Marvin Gaye, agree with the earlier poster on Stevie Wonder, and top it off with Sinatra. Stir (not shake) for a tasty brew.

1. U2--The Joshua Tree
2. Miles Davis--Kind of Blue
3. Sting--The Soul Cages
4. Beatles--Sgt. Pepper's
5. Springsteen--Any w/ the E Street Band (lean toward Darkness on the Edge of Town, tho)

47. Your fifth choice...
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 05:21 AM by JDWalley
5)Bach: St. Matthew Passion-Nikolaus Harnoncourt w/Concentus Musicus Wien

I hope that's their first recording of it, from the early 70s?

I guess I should list mine as well. I'm listing any multi-disc set as a single pick, but I still couldn't get it down to five...make it ten and I'll give it a go:

1) Beethoven: Complete Symphonies - Barenboim/Vienna (Teldec)
2) Mozart: Complete Symphonies - Hogwood/AAM (L'Oiseau-Lyre)
3) Handel: Messiah - McGeghan/Philharmonia Baroque (Harmonia Mundi)
4) Bach: St. Matthew Passion - Harnoncourt/CMW (Teldec)
5) The Julian Bream Edition (RCA)
6) Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 - Kertetz/Vienna Philharmonic (London)
7) Wagner: Ring Cycle - Solti/Vienna Philharmonic (London)
8) Baltimore Consort: On the Banks of Helicon (Dorian)
9) Baltimore Consort: LaRocque & Roll (Dorian)
10) Beatles: One (Capitol)

The trick here is that the Beethoven is a 6-disc set, the Moxart a 19-disc set, the Handel and Bach 3 discs each, the Bream Edition runs 28 discs (everything he ever recorded for RCA), and the Wagner contains 14 discs. Along with the other releases, that makes for a rather hefty 77-disc "top ten" list...but I couldn't imagine cutting a single one. (And even this one leaves out any piano, violin, or 'cello works. Anyone want to make it a "top fifteen" list? ;-) )

13. No way, I'd have to have five by genre...
at least..
And I could limit to 5 rock/pop; 5 classical; 5 jazz but would love to add five folk/bluegrass and maybe 5 world.

Ok, I have a tough time making decisions. What I do know is that anyone who spent a year listening to the same five albums, would probably be too wasted to ever return!

Love Supreme (Coltrane)
Leon Thomas - The Creator has a master plan

Red hot and Blues (Jazz)

Curtis Mayfield (Live) if there's a hell below we're all gonna go.

Trouble man (Marvin Gay)

Eddie Kendricks (My people Hold on)

I know it is six BUT I thinkj either Coltrane or Thomas is on the red hot cd)

on second thought I'd need a female voice so:

Sade (anything) and Lady sings the blues soundtrack might replace marvin and eddie.

Oh hell -- this is impossible.

I want my greensleeves by Coltrane and taj mahal too yikes

42. Oh wow...
Cut it to five, and it becomes harder. "Top ten" lists allow for personal favorites, but five "desert island" records cut it down to one very simple criterion:

What records can I not live without?

Thusly, without further ado, may I direct your attention to:

Love "Forever Changes"
Neutral Milk Hotel "In the Aeroplane over the Sea"
The Pixies "Surfer Rosa"
Bassholes "Blue Roots"
The Stooges "Fun House"

If I were given ten choices, I'd diversify my selection. Some Coltrane, some Fahey, Skip James. Sly, of course. More Columbus tunes from the likes of Gibson Bros. and Great Plains. But for five? I think these picks work pretty well for my needs.

48. That's harsh. Mine would be...
1) A Dead Kennedys mix disc I made for the trip containing my favourites!
2) My "25 Years of Disco" mix disc (contains Donna Summer, Claudja Barry, Kylie Minogue, Sly Foxx, Blur, Rammstein, KMFDM, Information Society, and Hadiqa Kiani)
3) A NIN mix disc w/cuts from "Pretty Hate Machine" and "The Downward Spiral"
4) Einsturzende Neubauten, "Strategies Against Architecture II"
5) Jello Biafra, "Machine Gun In The Clown's Hand" (spoken word)

I'd probably try to double-stack the CDs secretly in the cases, though, so I could bring

1) Lords Of Acid, "Voodoo U"
2) The Beastie Boys, "Hello Nasty"
3) The Bloodhound Gang, "One Fierce Beer Coaster"
4) Insane Clown Posse, "The Great Milenko"
5) The Ramones, "Ramones Mania"
