I've never called a senator - how does it go?
What do I say when someone answers the phone? Do I need to identify myself? Do they ask for information? Are they nice?

Do I just say "Please vote no on Alito"? Or will they take a longer message? Seems that courtesy is to just say "vote no on ALito" without a lot of reasoning, but I don't know.

I want to call them, but I haven't done it, because I have no idea how they respond or what the process is.

1. Just call them and remind them they work for you.
Approach it like you are calling your bank because of a serious discrepancy in your billing. Be firm with them and let them know that you will do everything with in your power not to get them re-elected if they don't do what you say.

2. I just called both of mine
They just took the message down. What I said was that I was a constituent, and that I wanted them to vote no/filibuster. The receptionists both said they would make sure they got the messages, and they did not take my name or address.

3. Typically,
senators do not answer their own phones, but this varies.

I consider it good telephone manners when phoning any elected representative to identify myself and assure that I am a voting consituent. If I get an assistant, I tend to just leave my message after identifying myself, (frex; - I'm <SOteric's real name here>, a registered voter in the state and a longtime resident of Seattle. I'm calling to urge Senator Cantwell to vote no in confirming Alito. I have serious qualms with regard to <qualms list edited for brevity>. Please pass my message along and thank you.")

If the senator answers their own phone, then I'd be inclined to leave out the part about passing my message along.

:hi:

4. Good form. All you new callers can use SOteric's general outline
It is quick, painless and no liberals will be hurt preforming this important act!

OK to be a bit nervous. The aids are probably used to it. Helps to have it written down if you do tend to get nervous & tongue tied when a little stressed.

After the first fifty or so times, it get pretty easy. And if feels damned good to take that free speech thing out for a little exercise ;)

Try it! You'll like it!
