Brian Henson talking about his Dad
"We're such a vengeance-driven culture," he says. "We're taught to get even, get justice. That can become your purpose in life. But that wasn't my father's way."
"I remember when I was 8 or 9, someone stole my father's camera and wallet from the trunk of his car . He just said, 'I guess they need it more than I do.' He closed the trunk; we drove home. He never mentioned it again. Someone else would have been angry for days. But it didn't cause my dad to stumble for a second."

5. Few replies.
Is it uncomfortable to read about a true democrat? Man Coulter would have busted his knees. with his own bat. Probably he was just a dork.

yond the voice of kermit..." As hard as I've tried I just can't. For me, Kermit died when his creator did. That is a wonderful link hickman, thank you.

On edit: my post on my neighbor's dog having cancer got no replies...It's an odd night in the lounge. :hi:

8. His name is Alex...and if I didn't have a dog...I'd say this is the best
darned dog in the world. He's 140 pounds of puppy. A big, loveable, loyal boy...and everytime I hear him bark now...the tears flow. I've been videotaping him all day long...to remember him.

Thank you hickman :(

we keep attaching ourselves to beings who have such a short life?

our beloved furbabies. I cannot imagine life without them. :(

9. I thought I was the only one.
I hear Kermit now, and I think maybe call him Dermat, or Schermat, but Kermit died with his creator. It's creepy to hear his voice now, knowing that it isn't Jim.

For pete's sake. Stop it. It's not funny, it's asinine. Please just cut it out, it hurts people.

19. Transphobia
People who are transgendered or intersexed, or whose gender presentation falls outside of the cultural norms of "girly-girl" and "macho-man" are hurt when people try to use a presumption of trans-identity to smear someone loathesome. First off, it implies that the loathesome person is more loathesome because of his/her (presumed) gender identity, and second it implies that gender identity is a legitimate target for attack in a way that other essential characteristics, like race or disability, are not.

25. Sure, not a problem, hon. Here are a few.
The resources out there for friends and family aren't so numerous, but here are a few. Try starting here:

If you wonder what transpeople really look like, who they are, and how they live, here are some great examples.

Successful Transmen:
http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/TSsuccesses/TransMen.html

Successful Transwomen:
http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/TSsuccesses/TSgallery1.html

Here are a few things to read:

Some myths and concepts about transgendered people
http://www.queensu.ca/humanrights/tgts/tgts_myths.htm

Trans 101, from an individual's page:
http://nbtsc.org/~ftmichael/trans101.html

This is a short etiquette guide - it's a little crabby IMO but not too bad:
http://www.kisa.ca/respect.html

And sadly, some of the reasons why it's important for people without TG friends and family to understand:

A list of transgender murder victims
http://www.gender.org/remember/day/who.html

An article on GBLT youth suicides -

"A growing body of research literature has provided the estimate that gays, lesbians, and bisexual youth attempt suicide at a rate 2-3 times higher than their heterosexual peers. Some studies indicate that the rate of attempted suicide for transgender youth is higher than 50%."

13. It is uncomfortable to read transphobic jokes, even about Repukes
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 11:18 PM by AlienGirl
Ann Coulter has plenty of characteristics to pick on, without her perceived gender identity being one of them. After all, if the rumor were that she had a black parent, we wouldn't think it was acceptible to call her AfricANN Coulter, would we?

24. Nicely said! I'm getting sick and tired of the Man Coulter jokes.
For fuck's sake, not only does she not look like a man anyway, which makes it a fucking dumb insult, it's also an insult to all the women who do, in fact, look like men. Who fucking cares?

23. Maybe it's because people aren't interested in Jim Henson?
Jesus Christ, are we supposed to cream our pants every time a democrat is mentioned?

And ol' Jim wasn't all perfect and Christlike as you might imagine.

27. Nobody said he was perfect and Christlike
But he was a nice man and did alot to encourage and help puppeteers just starting out. The people who worked for him were loyal because he was a good boss. I never met him, but from what I gather from people who did, was that no matter how rich or famous he got, he was still approachable.
