A Call for Nation States again - who is playing?
http://www.nationstates.net/

Since October, the DU region has gotten pretty big, but there is still room for more! Just go to the above site and create your own country (you'll be ask some questions so your government can best be defined). Then move your region to Democratic Underground. There is even a regional forum where you can put your country on the map. It's free and it's fun!

This is my country:

The Commonwealth of Social Carolina is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its devotion to social welfare. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 395 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 45%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Book Publishing and Door-to-door Insurance Sales.

The government has cut its subsidies for all special interest groups, schools have extensive counseling programs for troubled students, there have been reports of people marrying housepets, and army rations are served on silver platters. Crime is relatively low. Social Carolina's national animal is the Beagle, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Caroline.

Social Carolina is ranked 9th in the region and 29,082nd in the world for Most Politically Apathetic Citizens.

1. Mine:
The Republic of Ontarnois is a tiny, socially progressive nation, notable for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 47%, but much higher for the wealthy. A small private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Ontarnois's national animal is the beaver, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the loony.

The Free Land of Shella is a tiny, socially progressive nation, renowned for its burgeoning jaguar population. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The large government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Social Welfare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 29%, but much higher for the wealthy. A substantial private sector is led by the Trout Farming industry, followed by Basket Weaving and Arms Manufacturing.

Crime is moderate, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Shella's national animal is the jaguar, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the dollar.

Lack of funding??? 29% tax rate???? :o

27. LionessCountry
The Republic of LionessCountry is a tiny, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its absence of drug laws. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt individuals juggles the competing demands of Commerce, Social Welfare, and Religion & Spirituality. Income tax is unheard of. A large private sector is led by the Basket Weaving industry, followed by Automobile Manufacturing and Trout Farming.

Crime is a serious problem, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. LionessCountry's national animal is the lioness, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the glory

Unfortunately, that is the only control you have over those sort of things.

So if you say "we should spend more to protect the environment", your tax rate probably increases and the percentage on environment goes up as well.

I privatized the prisons, so that is why I spend nothing on law enforcement.

54. Yeah, weird, huh?
I have no way of controlling the tax rates for my nation beyond how I choose to resolve a particular issue; you have to read the issues carefully to determine if, by the wording, a tax will be implemented as a result of approval. I didn't quite get that back when I started playing, but I do now. I try to stick to raising taxes to pay for social services and such. Lately, I have become very proud of our compulsory military service and non-existant crime rate, so taxes will remain high for a while.

Also, since a large percentage of the nation's GDP comes from gambling

61. I chose to make voting mandatory too.
I think it's the duty of all citizens of a democracy to pay attention to the govt. and to vote. Nice thing about NationStates is that you get to see that idea expressed.

65. You must be the Republic of Chamomila.
Welcome! You might want to remind Mass Produced Coleslaw (MPC) that he missed you. I doubt it was intentional.

The Republic of Goodwill Towards Man
"All we are saying, is give peace a chance."

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights:
Good Economy:
Fragile Political Freedoms:
Average

Location: the South Pacific
The Republic of Goodwill Towards Man is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The enormous, socially-minded government concentrates mainly on Social Welfare, although Healthcare and Education are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 36%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Crime is totally unknown. Goodwill Towards Man's national animal is the badger, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the euro.

63. Still playing - leader of Herradura Anejo!!!
The Disputed Territories of Herradura Anejo is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate, hard-working population of 355 million enjoy extensive civil freedoms, particularly in social issues, while business tends to be more regulated.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and the Environment. The average income tax rate is 89%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Dog breeding has been banned in accordance with recent animal experimentation laws, euthanasia is illegal, all streets are privately owned toll roads, and retirement homes are often fitted with luxurious suites. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is a problem, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Herradura Anejo's national animal is the Nebelung Cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Agave.

Herradura Anejo is ranked 6th in the region and 18,325th in the world for Most Politically Apathetic Citizens

The Disputed Territories of Sweaty Naked People
"No need for modesty!"

UN Category: Scandinavian Liberal Paradise
Civil Rights:
Excellent Economy:
Reasonable Political Freedoms:
Excellent

Location: Democratic Underground

The Disputed Territories of Sweaty Naked People is a huge, socially progressive nation, notable for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 349 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level of social equality free from the usual accompanying government corruption.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Equality and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 61%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Motorists must pay to enter inner-cities during peak hours, the public health bureaucracy is wrapped in miles of red tape, government police forces protect public schools from the threat of protest, and referenda can be called for any law at the request of at least one third of the voting population. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is moderate. Sweaty Naked People's national animal is the cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the sock.

Sweaty Naked People is ranked 11th in the region and 37,897th in the world for Most Politically Apathetic Citizens.

The Kingdom of Kiryuu is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its punitive income tax rates. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 302 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level of social equality free from the usual accompanying government corruption.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Education, and Social Equality. The study of medicine is popular throughout Kiryuu, the Kiryuu Automotive Racing Series draws millions of spectators annually while those near the tracks complain about the noise, the nation has an international reputation for compassion, and guns are banned. 70. The Commonwealth of Pennstein is here!
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 11:27 PM by charlie and algernon
The Commonwealth of Pennstein is a tiny, safe nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Social Welfare, although Healthcare and Education are secondary priorities. The average income tax rate is 50%, and even higher for the wealthy. A substantial private sector is led by the Information Technology, Pizza Delivery, and Automobile Manufacturing industries.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Pennstein's national animal is the squirrel, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the penn.

73. The People's Republic of Velo Riders
Just chiming in. I was wondering why there was such an influx of new comrade states.

Welcome to all you new folk.

Hiya to the rest.

Does anyone know how often the UN category changes with issue answers? For the longest time, I was a Scandinavian liberal paradise. Now I'm stuck as a left-leaning college state.

****

The People's Republic of Velo Riders is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its strong anti-business politics. Its compassionate population of 2.3 billion enjoy extensive civil freedoms, particularly in social issues, while business tends to be more regulated.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and the Environment. The average income tax rate is 100%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The government helps teach children how to kill a man from six paces, artists are pillars of society, citizens are expected to be proficient in at least five languages, and Velo Riders is notorious for its citizens' infidelity. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Velo Riders's national animal is the wombat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the kronor.

Velo Riders is ranked 42nd in the region and 110,409th in the world for Largest Soda Pop Sector.

74. As I understand it ...
each answer to each issue pushes your nation in a certain direction. The game keeps track of 3 freedoms: civil, economic, and political, and each answer to an issue affects how the game determines your UN category. Scandanavian Liberal Paradise is high civil freedoms, low economic freedoms, and moderate political freedoms. Left-Leaning College State is high civil freedoms, moderate economic freedoms, and moderate political freedoms. Personally, I think the Left-Leaning College State is ideal. Ultimately, though, you must have recently approved an issue or two that bumped up your economic freedoms. That's all that's changed.

Check this handy-dandy guide to NS Mechanics if you'd like to learn more.
