no biggie. Everything seems to work fine and most amerikan women like us cut.

7. That's the way it ought to be.
Infant circumcision is still quite routine over here and a travesty, I think, to foreclose on a man's opportunity to decide the issue for himself.

But have never understood why it became routine in the U.S.

From the other 'perspective' I fear I don't know enough to comment.

17. I didn't want my son circumcised, but he is
Hubby adamantly insisted on it. I figure that he knows more about the subject than I, so I deferred to his judgment. At least our ob used novocaine so the baby didn't suffer.

25. Yes, and it's inadequate pain control anyhow
The glans and foreskin are fused in newborns and circumcision requires that they be torn apart before the foreskin can be crushed or cut away (depending on the method of circumcision used.) Novocaine would control the surface pain but does nothing for the pain caused by the separation. The best form of pain control for this procedure (it's still inadequate) is the dorsal ring block but it's not often used.

Also, pain control after the procedure is (when provided at all) inadequate for the considerable amount of pain created by a raw wound in one of the most densely enervated parts of the body being subjected to diaper friction and urine.

28. I'm sure they use Novocaine before they do anything
painful like separate the glans. I'm not a cheerleader for circumcision by any means, but I think to imply that there is no way to do it painlessly is a little dramatic.

I certainly agree that it's pointless unless there are religious reasons involved; that's why I was leaning against it.

I imagine that you're right about the possibility for pain afterward but as I recall (this was some 16 years ago) his penis was covered in ointment and healed within days.

31. Yes, but more than say a vaccination?
The pain of the Novocaine shot is at least very brief, like a vaccination, and saves them from pain that would be ... well ... far worse to say the least.

How did I find myself defending circumcision? I don't even like it that much :)

35. A shot in the penis???
I'm female so I don't know how that would feel. I would much rather take it in the arm, the thigh or the butt. Can't imagine having a shot of anything in a private area.

42. Oh I have!!!
Twice...natural both times. Zero pain control. I forgot about that...thanks for reminding me. However, in childbirth there is so much pressure in that area that I'm not sure it would be the same.

50. OUCH
Circumcision in the Greco-Roman World...

"Techniques for restoring the appeareance of a foreskin were known by the 2nd century B.C. In one such technique, a copper weight (called the Judeum pondum) was hung from the remnants of the circumcised foreskin until, in time, they became sufficiently stretched to cover the glans. The first-century writer Celsus described two surgical techniques for foreskin restoration in his medical treatise De Medicina. <27> In one of these, the skin of the penile shaft was loosened by cutting in around the base of the glans. The skin was then stretched over the glans and allowed to heal, giving the appearance of an uncircumcised penis. Jewish religious writers denounced such practices as abrogating the covenant of Abraham in 1 Maccabees and the Talmud <28>. Because of these attempts, and for other reasons, the Pharisees, ca. 100, added two more steps to the Biblical rite of circumcision"

BTW..My parents were in the military and I got CLIPPED because the military hosiptal.

37. Husband is not, son is not.
I'm so glad my husband is not, because I did not want my son to be and it may have been a more complicated issue if it meant that daddy and baby would be different.

I just think that there needs to be a really compelling reason for any kind of medical intervention.

So happy I didn't have to put my baby through that.
