Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
The homeless? Every time the temp falls below 40 you have to wonder how they survive. Here in Michigan it's at least 5 months of the year. Some are just kids, and some are old. Tonight when you close and lock your doors with your kids safe in their beds, say a prayer for for those in the wind, please.

1. Right on.
I was considering starting a thread as an exercise in collective consciousness, sending out good vibes for those who live in poverty, emotional/physical/spiritual pain and injustice.

Thank you, hickman1937, for thinking about the "have nots."

3. Don't thank me please. I have a warm bed.
I have done nothing yet to ensure warm beds for the most helpless in our country. I'm just now starting to wonder how I can live with myself knowing this.

2. I can't remember where, but recently
I read an article about a guy who robbed a bank or something. When the police got there, they arrested him. Later they found out he needed medical care and got himself arrested because he didn't have health insurance. I think both issues sort of fall in the same category.

I can't believe homelessness exists in a civilized society. I sometimes wonder if we are as civilized as we think we are.

15. Bingo. The party of christians who owe nothing to anybody.
The party that loves to see wrong doers fry, and is noted for their "charitable giving". Yes I saw that study that said that red states gave more to charity. I also saw the break down. Most of their "charitable" donations were to their churches. Another skewed fucking study.

5. Almost $250,000,000,000 spent on war since 2003...
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 06:01 AM by primate1
That could have instead been spent on 2,000,000+ houses for those who need them. There's no wondering to do. The answer seems pretty evident to me.

6. My aunt said the same thing about the millions
sent to the Red Cross and the millions alloted by Congress that will never reach those who actually need it. It will be wasted along the way and never truly trickly down. Piss on the poor solutions never work.

12. primate1, you have not done your homework.
According to Reagun, the homeless are homeless because they choose to be. Why shouldn't the bushfamily beef up the family wealth by sending the family army to Iraq and capturing oil fields. I think we just don't get it. Some people(wealthy republicans) count and some people(anyone who gets in the way of wealthy republicans wealth building)don't.

11. Maybe we need to redefine civilized.
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 02:11 AM by hickman1937
Maybe it doesn't have to do with keeping our house clean and being able to pay our bills. Maybe it has to do with making sure that if we have a place to live and steady meals, we have to look out for those that don't. But of course that coulter thing will call you a traitor to her America.

8. Of all the crap I've had to live with in the last 20 republican ruled
years, this is the one that sticks in my craw. The wealthiest country ever on the planet and people still are freezing to death because their poor and/or sick. I'm giving a shout out to all those cops in this country that jail these people just to keep them alive and out of the cold.

9. We're working with a local group and with these guys.
http://www.nationalhomeless.org/

But it never feels like enough. I know five of my homeless neighbors pretty well. When the cold comes and I don't see them, I worry about them.

We can do better than this.

10. Actually, they probably do
Because it's the time of year when the miniscule percentage of the population that gives a fuck about them temporarily increases.
