Styx vs REO Speedwagon vs Journey: may the flame war commence!
A good old fashioned 70s shlock rock cage match!

Pick your sides and keep it clean!

In this corner: Styx

In this corner: REO Speedwagon

In this corner: Journey

15.
Actually, we went to a Journey concert here in Anchorage back sometime in the late '80s or early '90s, I don't remember exactly when, and they were great. They very kindly added an extra show, too, because the tickets to the first two had sold out so quickly. We starve for good concerts up here.

Not many tour busses riding up and down the Al-Can Highway are there?

so usually they have a really stripped down stage show. Just too expensive to bring everything up here.

6. Toss up btw Styx and Journey.
Steve Perry and Dennis DeYoung have two of the best voices in rock. REO only ever made two songs that I liked, and I love both. Roll With the Changes, and Time for Me to Fly.

9. Can't comment on Styx
since pretty much all I've heard from them was whatever was on radio.

REO Speedwagon — a pretty good garage band that got big by recording over-produced schlock.

Journey — were good. Damned good. Too bad they sold out.

11. Dude!
They all sold out - that was their reason for existing.

You don't write songs like Babe, Keep on Lovin' You or Open Arms with any sense of musical pride. It's all about the teenage girls and the boys that love them!

21. Nope
It's all about the label suits and producers who say, "You signed a contract. You do it our way, or you walk." And since there are, effectively, only four U.S. record labels anymore, you do what they tell you.

Alas, 'tis the nature of the biz. :grr:

23. Tell me about it...
I'm a musician who just independently released my band's 4th full length record.

Nowadays, though, it's pretty much impossible to get any sort of contract at all. They only want to talk to you if you can make them instant money. The days of developing artists are long gone.

Loyalty to friends is tough sometimes, but you have to stick it out. Nothing worse than having to go to see a friend play in a band that you hate - you're a good friend.

13. Speedwagon sucks. Journey and Styx is tough, but I'll go with Journey
because it's one of the first albums my zealot parents reluctantly let me buy. I must have listened to Wheel in the Sky a thousand times. What about Get the Knack?

But the Knack declined to take part in this match for fear of tarnishing their reputation.

Did your parents think that Wheel In The Sky was a Gawd song?

30. I don't think so. It was my mom really. She had a bible in one hand and a
bottle in the other. A very bad combination. (She's recovered now, thank God.) She could see the devil everywhere. I think I just wore them down. It didn't have any language or outright devil worship so she let it go. She didn't have the energy to filter everything so it relaxed after that. It sure sucked for a while though. I couldn't have a radio. All my friends would be talking about the popular songs and what else was on the album. I'd only be familiar with what I caught outside the house.

19. Highway run...Into the midnight sun

Wheels go 'round and 'round
You're on my mind
Restless hearts
Sleep alone tonight
Sendin' all my love
Along the wire

They say that the road
Ain't no place to start a family
Right down the line
It's been you and me
Lovin' a music man
Ain't all it's supposed to be
Oh girl, you stand by me
I'm forever yours

Faithfully

Circus life
Under the big top world
We all need the clowns
To make us smile
Through space and time
Always another show
Wondering where I am
Lost without you

And being apart ain't easy
On this love affair
Two strangers learn
To fall in love again
I get the joy
Of rediscovering you
Oh girl, you stand by me
I'm forever yours

Faithfully

woah oh oh oh
woah oh oh oh
woah oh oh oh
wooooooooah!
faithfully
I'm forever yours
Ever yours
Faithfully

Based on "Riding The Storm Out" alone.

Styx is not Chicago, they are South Side Chicago.

REO = Cubs.
Styx = White Sox.

Journey? Lame...

38. Hey, no flames.... but you can take the long way home while I look at
your girlfriend, even though she's the only one you got. Sundog, these hits are a bit... sappy for me. Though not as classically sappy as Journey's SHE'S AN UPTOWN GIRL... LIVING IN A DOWNTOWN WAH-HORLD.... or WHEN THE LIGHTS.... GO OUT.... IN THE CITY... no doubt the ultimate hold up your bic lighter song.

42. Whenever I see REO Speedwagon I think about...
...Spring of 1978... I was standing in line to get show tickets to see this kinda new singer/song writer and his new band on his second trip to LA.

There was this huge line and I was midway back. The ticket lady came around the velvet rope and announced that REO Speedwagon
tickets were not going to be available until later in the week,

Everyone left the line...there were just a couple of us left there. :wow:

Then those of us still in line bought tickets to see Elvis Costello & the Attractions, Rockpile and Mink DeVille play at Hollywood High School's Gymnasium.

I don't know enough about REO Speedwagon or Journey, but as for Styx....

I rather liked that group. I believe I have a couple of copies of Paradise Theatre, the album that is laser-etched on the back side.

http://lockgen.com/damnyankees/discography/stpt.html

I have it on vinyl, not the CD.

A few years ago, I was spinning the dial one night. The announcer on the radio said that he would be playing all of Styx's top ten hits. "Ha," I said to myself; "that won't take long." The songs went on and on and on. I had forgotten how many top ten hits Styx had.

Not a bad group at all.
