In partial response to johnnie's thread.

Only 16 people who ever lived can be considered better guitarists than Jack White.

1. Only 4,000 magazines are better than the Rolling Stone
Rolling Stone is full of shit too, if they think that mediocre nerd weaering a costume is a guitar player.

Rock and rollers do not wear costumes and have color-coordinated stage scenery.

15. Tell that to Bowie and Freddy Mercury
And hell, don't you think that Angus Young wears a costume? Dude's been wearing it since the very earliest of days, and no one rocks like Angus.

Just sayin....

2. Who the fuck voted on that bullshit list?!?!?!?

I'm gonna guess this is more proof that by defintion to be a music critic means to be: 1) hearing impaired, 2) Devlepmoentally delayed, and 3) Utterly infatuated only with what is trendy.

Kurt Cobain ahead of Jeff Beck?!?!? :wtf:
B.B King -- obviously an icon, but the least interestig of any of the three Kings (Freddie and ALbert also)
Bo Diddley ahead of Steve Howe,
Johnny Fucking RAMONE?!? He'd probaby be pissed to be on this list.

Music critics: could they just do us all a favor and fuck off and die?

4. Any critic who puts Jack White ahead of Richard Thompson...
...isn't qualified to make the list. Actually White shouldn't be ahead of at least 20 people who are listed below him...

7. How is "better" measured?
Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 04:27 PM by NNadir
I have always had a problem with "best guitarist" or "better guitarist." It seems a little self serving, as it reflects the speaker's personal taste and little else.

What exactly is that supposed to mean?

There about people on this "best" list to whom I would actively avoid listening.

9. For the record
I posted that last night in case anyone was interested, I don't really listen to The White Stripes. I think they are interesting but not my cup of tea. His guitar playing made me feel real good about my own last night though..lol.

That list is a bit fucked up but then again I canceled my long-time subscription to them about 15 years ago. They have a few good articles but for the most part they have become as much of a rag as commercial music. No offense to the people who like that type of music, it just doesn't interest me any longer.

Any list of great guitarists without Django Reinhart in the top five isn't worth shit. I can name fifty guitarists better than Jack White without breaking a sweat.

14. Agreed. And no Don Ross????
Hell, in 1996, Don won the prestigious U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship for the second time - I don't believe that anyone else has ever done that.

I've seen Ross live a number of times. If you close your eyes and listen to him, it's easy to imagine 2 or 3 guitars and a percussionist up there - but it's only Don and his acoustic.

I saw the White Stripes on the DS last night - that dude sounded like a 2nd year guitar student in comparison!

And he's ranked above Mark Knopfler and Trey Anastasio (not to mention the rest of that list) to boot? :wtf:

12. The placements of Fripp,
Zappa, McLaughlin and Howe are laughable. All are top 10 on any thinking musician's list. And Bert Jansch at 94??!!?? :wtf: Jimmy Page once admitted that his acoustic guitar style was a cross of "Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and total incompetence." Jansch is the most influential acoustic player of the last 40 years. And where the hell is Wishbone Ash's Andy Powell, master of the Flying V?

17. It's a fashion magazine - they don't know dick about music anymore!
Seriously.

I actually don't have a gripe about Jack White as a musician or a guitar player. He's no better or worse than Neil Young. And technical talent has absolutely nothing to do with the ability to actually write a good song.

However, that magazine sucks anymore.

They know as much about musics as MTV - ZILCH!

18. townshend, clearly...zappa? drop that crack pipe y'all...
any list that doesn't have eric johnson on it, does have joni mitchell on it, with john mcLaughlin & john fahey so far down the list can only be a name recognition/popularity contest-list.

while playing keyboard; white couldn't keep his fingers out of the way last night on the daily show...i expect to see him above oscar petersen, thelonious monk & bill evans on a piano poll with a fan base like his

20. I don't get why people are so pissed at/about the White Stripes
I think lists are generally stupid, and Rolling Stone lists haven't been the slightest bit relevant for years.

I like the White Stripes. I've seen them many times in tiny clubs, and a few times in large venues. They're a great band. Now, I could do without this whole zombie Johnny Depp thing Jack White is up to lately. And, I haven't gotten the new record yet but I will eventually and chances are I'll like it well enough. It probably won't be my favorite of theirs, but so what? None of those things will make me think they're talentless hacks.

I don't know that he's some kind of messiah of guitar playing, but whatever he does, I like it. Makes me want to go out and dance and yell and jump around, which is sometimes all I ask of my rock and or roll, (and oddly enough, why the zombie Johnny Depp Jack White makes me laugh.)

I just don't get it. You'd think Dylan just went electric or something.
