HELP!!! Book recommendations needed for my wife.
She's pretty sick and is napping right now. I'm about to take the little one out to run some errands and want to pick up a book for the wife. It's a desparate situation because, my wife is a total biblio-junkie but is without a book right now. Any other day of the week, I'd just go to the library and pick out about 5 or 6 and hope one was acceptable, but the library is closed on Sunday. So I need to get it right the first time. Please help!

(By the way, some recent favourites of hers have been stuff like the Time Traveller's Wife, novels by Jonathan Lethem, Life of Pi, the Secret Life of Bees, and the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. She's also a pretty big fan of mysteries, in particular Ian Rankin and P.D. James.)

1. Get Along Came A Spider By James Patterson
It is 100% can't put it down amazing.

And don't worry if she saw the movie. The movie is sooooooooo different from the book you would never know they were related at all.

2. Most of Patterson's books are that way.
Good suggestion, OMC!

9. 'fraid I left too quick.
So I've already got a title. But I'm gonna bookmark this thread. Next trip to the library, I'll get the Patterson work. Looking at amazon, I see the guy is really prolific, so we've tapped into a goldmine if my wife digs him.

Thanks for the suggestion!

20. I did a hit and run
Posted the thread, and didn't read any responses before getting the little goofy one bundled up and out the door.

That's an amazing shot. It's stuff like that which makes me appreciate the shoot-out even though my beloved Leafs have been at the worst end of most of them.

4. I am reading "Wicked" right now.
I am usually more into bio's and non-fiction, but this is a pretty good read. It's about the life of the "Wicked Witch of the West", pre-Dorothy. It's really about the politics of Oz.
Good stuff.

16. She saw the musical and loved it.
I'm not sure she's aware that it was based on a novel. (I wasn't, anyway.) I'll look into it. Thanks!

5. If you can stand the mess the website is in right now, you might try
looking over: http://curvynovels.info/

I tend to enjoy cozy and funny mysteries myself. Love the Southern Sisters books by the late Anne George. The Southern Vampire series is fun (Charlaine Harris, I think). Stephanie Plum mysteries by Janet Evanovich are a real hoot but she can eat those up in a hurry.

7. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
A great book for a sick day. It's a very lengthy book to say the least. Very old fashioned.

10. Perfect suggestion.
But unfortunately it's a book I forgot to put on the "recently read and loved by my wife" list.

:)

8. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles
A lot of fun, interesting, and it moves slowly enough you can read it off-and-on. Me, I tear through mysteries and stuff like that, and suddenly I'm without books again. I'm in the midst of Fortress of Solitude, which is pretty good too.

14. Just put a library hold on the Murakami
Gotta love online librarying.

I was surprised how many holds there are on it, given how it's not a new release. If there's roughly a one month wait on a book that's eight years old, I guess it's a pretty good sign.

By the way my wife adored Fortress of Solitude. I'm mostly a non-fiction sorta guy, but I've been thinking about giving it a crack.

12. Richard North Patterson's recent books have political themes
takes on the anti abortion folks and the gun nut folks in two books (about a presidential candidate, and a president (he wins the election) about to be innaugerated); and his most recent takes on the issue of the death penalty.

Well written mystery/thrillers - with really interesting political themes.

15. That appears to be more up my alley.
Library has 6 copies still on order. There are already 92 holds.

Hopefully Santa Claus will be kind.

Thanks for the recommendation!

17. Thanks everybody!
I wound up picking up this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0618329706/002-4151607-1793607?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance

because I was out the door before reading the responses.

Gonna bookmark this thread, because there's lots of good ideas for when she'll be bookless again in a few days.

Thanks again!

19. Wow, it sounds like your wife has had our book group's
reading list.

Some recommendations:

Atonement -- very good, but kinda heavy

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night -- told from the perspective of an autistic boy

The Kite Runner -- I haven't read this yet but everyone I've spoken to really enjoyed it

Hypocrite in a Poufy White Dress -- a memoir by wise-cracking fortyish New Yorker Susan Gilman -- just a light, fun read.

23. Definitely Kite Runner and
you might try A Place Where the Sea Remembers by Sandra Benitez, The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich, Dreams of My Russian Summers by Andrei Makine, Dreams From My Father....by Barack Obama, The Grass Dancer by Susan Power and anything by Sarah Dunant.

24. I just laughed my ass off reading this: "Repulbican Like Me"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1591023602/002-7851411-4322409?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance

Harmon Leon, a confessed liberal, dresses up like a conservative and enters their world in a very funny & amusing manner. He explores such groups as the Young Republicans, the Arnold Campaign, White Supremists, Anti-Choice and even Christian Wrestlers.

He's pretty fun - I loved the book

25. If she likes mysteries
try the Deborah Knott series by Margaret Maron. Starting with "Bootlegger's Daughter". Nice books.

26. Upon reflection
it might be helpful to get ahold of a copy of Book Lust and/or Book Lust II by Nancy Pearl. This is an outstanding compilation with categories so that you can find the recommended book for whatever your mood. N. Pearl was a librarian and now does a lot of book commentaries, such as on NPR stations.
