X-BOX 360 - Crashing like MAD!
So, the Xbox 360’s been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages. There’s even a pic up on flickr that purports to show the 360 crashing as the Microsoft logo loads. Sure, it’s too early to declare this a pandemic and start hurling Xboxes out of windows, but it still has us wondering: How’s your 360 holding up?

4. Mine's doing fine.
Yeah, I know it's "big, bad Microsoft," but I don't give a damn. This is one sleek system, and I'm happy with my purchase.

This sort of thing has happened a lot in the past. I remember that there were reports of the PS2 doing this too when it first came out.

(please give details if possible, thanks :)

19. Yes and no.
It all depends on what kind of games you like. If you're a fan of GoldenEye/Perfect Dark and the spy shooter genre (as opposted to the more Halo-esque games), then the 360 is worth it for Perfect Dark Zero alone. The graphics, which didn't appear to be that impressive of a leap at first, are really impressive as hell when you see the games in motion.

And besides the games, the whole interface is much easier to use. You can now bring up the dashboard whenever you want, which makes listening to music rips or switching out games incredibly simple. It's much more integrated with Xbox Live now as well.

It's very, very user friendly, and the little tweaks (like being able to turn the system on with the remote) add up to make the old Xbox absolute. I had to have it, but I'd really wait until they've released more games, released the backwards compatability expansions, and lowered the price slightly.

5. Curiously enough, I haven't seen these reports from an actual gaming site.
Nor have I heard it from anyone I know that owns the system. Which leads me to believe they're likely nothing more than MS-hating rumors.

16. Sites I don't see in that search:
IGN, Gamespy, or EGM, or in other words, the biggest, most respectable sources in gaming.

20. FWIW ....

IGN, which also controls Gamespy and its subsidiaries, is owned by Fox Interactive Media, which in turn has business relationships with the Microsoft corporation. It has a direct, vested interst in the success of the XBox and has done more than any other gaming site to promote its impending release. I mean, please, a daily countdown? One of Fox IM's revenue streams in fact comes from a relationship with the Xbox.

"Biggest" does not necessarily mean "most respected." It just means "biggest."

23. FWIW...
The PS3 version of the site gave 10 reasons not to buy an XBox 360 and to wait for a PS3 instead.

Sorry, but it's not bias. Their individual system sites cater to fans of the system.

27. If you insist ...

Their Xbox subsidiary did the exact opposite, so I'm not sure what the point is. I'm also not clear on how "it's not bias" and noting that the site that caters to the PS3 counseled waiting for the PS3 go together logically.

Anyway, I have no dog in this hunt and happen to think the reports of the XBox problems are likely a bit overstated. However, I'm a regular reader of the major gaming sites, and I am quite confident in saying that bias of varying kinds is rampant in them. As you yourself say, the individual sites cater to a fan base.

28. PS ...

The forums on TeamXbox, IGN's Xbox site, have quite a number of reports of problems like the ones described in the OP.

Microsoft itself, without admitting anything openly, has also acknowledged the possibility of some problems and has pointed people to the tech support line, saying they will replace defective boxes that cannot be fixed via tech support.

24. Curiously enough, I don't get lots of my Bush info from an actual MSM
site. So everything I get that isn't from the mainstream press must just be Bush hating rumors.

6. And think that people spent up to $6000 for that Microsoft Crap!
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 10:48 AM by HypnoToad
Same old stuff yet people continue to buy Microsoft products.

Sorry to be cynical but I've seen the following crash:

* DOS
* Windows 2 (a real joke)
* Windows 3.0
* Windows 3.1
* Windows For Workgroups 3.11
* Windows 95 (their Office95 product not being 32-bit either...)
* Windows 95 (Service Release 2)
* Windows 98 (also happened in front of Bill Gates' stinking face too)
* Windows 98 Second Edition
* Windows ME
* Windows NT 4
* Windows 2000 Pro
* Windows XP (this also happened at the XP launch event in Minneapolis!)
* Windows XP (Second Edition or SP2)

That's over a 15+ year period.

If people haven't figured it out by NOW that Microsoft couldn't make a stable product to save its life, I cannot have sympathy for their supporters. (meanwhile we'll hear more about how Microsoft got into a flaggering industry and revitalized it, go figure...)

9. They can and do make stable products.
Trouble is, they've made the consumers their alpha testers.

My Win2k system is plenty stable...now.

in my heavy photoshopping 60 meg clipboard files illustrator indesign world....

it is poop.

although to its credit, apps seem to crash more than the OS does, compared to XP pro.

I have an apple now, I am above all this. ;)

I was amazed at how well he handled the disappointment at not having one when he got home on the day they were released.

22. I have little sympathy ...

Maybe I have sympathy for the kids who don't know any better and who may end up with one of these machines that doesn't work properly on Christmas morning, but that's the limit.

Microsoft charges you to be a beta tester. They're pretty up-front about it too, if you pay any attention to the licensing agreement, which basically says they do not guarantee anything they're offering actually works. Car salesmen were once run out of town for the kinds of business practices MS uses to make billions.
