Controversy: Johnny Cash vs. Music Row

CMT will debut Controversy: Johnny Cash vs. Music Row, featuring interviews with Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Ricky Skaggs and manager Lou Robin. The hour-long special chronicles Cash's struggle to find a place for his music as country radio playlists were drastically changing and country radio was not playing Cash's records. In 1986, after a 28-year relationship, Columbia Records unceremoniously dropped Cash from the label. His new union with Mercury Records in 1987 yielded little success. Upon signing with non-Nashville label American Records, Cash ultimately found a compatible label home for his music.

2. I will have to see that
When he went to American Records, and got produced by Rick Rubin, he made the most authentic music of his career, at least since the "Live At Folsom Prison" album from 1968.

His autobiography is worth reading. I would definitely like to see this special.

8. There's that Rick Rubin guy again!
That guy really seems to know what he's doing. I just read a rave review of an album he produced for, of all the people, Neil Diamond.

9. He has worked with Slayer, Tom Petty...

And a few others from various genres. He does what producers should do... stay the fuck out of the way!

Merle Haggard benefitted similarly when he signed on with the punk label Anti a few years ago. Spare production, direct communication.

12. Rosanne Cash is a treasure.
as is her half-sister Carlene Carter. As a man and a musician, I'd sell my soul in a second to be with either, if it weren't for Mrs R and that fact that neither would have me.

Seriously, although the two of them are far, far apart in musical styles, each is vastly underrated by the listening public. Two fine musicians, they are.
