What's your most disappointing CD purchase this year?
Mine is Rihanna's Music of the Sun.

Pon de Replay was great, and since she's from Barbados, I figured they'd play that up a lot, but except for a couple of other songs, it's a very American-sounding, mediocre album.

1. Either it's been a banner year for popular music, or...
...too many DUers are embarrased to admit they bought Hilary Duff's Greatest Hits.

2. well it is an american produced album
i think by the same team that does kelly clarkson albums... there ya go

i still think the single is great... but i had a feeling that her sound would get watered down

something similar happened with bebel gilberto... her first album was completely in portuguese, very bossa roots heavy... her second was produced by marius de vries (who i usually think is good)... BUT a lot was in english & attempted to move toward a larger audience, therefore it got watered down x(

3. I thought it was a Jay-Z production.

And of course, Jay-Z's American, but I just sort of hoped he'd be more into exploring the Bermuda angle. What the hell do I know?

The folks that produce Kelly Clarkson are the same ones, IIRC, who are behind Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, and the new Bratz album.

4. Buddy Holly Collection & Big Mama Thorton live in Europe
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 11:42 PM by DanCa
It was a love song collection I wanted some of his faster songs so I could learn how to play the harp better. I didn't read the fine print. The Big Mama Thorton cd had a poor sound quality as opposed to her other cd's i think it was her live venue that did it.

5. I'm never disappointed with any album purchases...
I always download the album to check out first and decide if it's worth my money.

16. I have Rhapsody online service
I check the entire album out (not clips - full tracks) online and if I really like it after a few plays I'll buy it.

$10/month to ensure I never buy a bad CD again

7. I know you're not going to believe me
But I rarely (if ever) have a CD I've totally zonked out on after buying it. I think the last one I was depressed abut buying because it wasn't nearly as good as I thought it was going to be was American Music Clubs "Love Songs For Patriots", and that was more my hopes than the actual quality of the CD itself..

I merely have to point to your Insane Music programs to prove my point!

9. Well, shit, I could have told you by the cliche make up and camera shot
that that album would be a piece of shit.

She's obviously not a musician; she's a corporate product.

No legitimate artist looks like that.

12. Yeah, sure.
Here's another album you can tell is a piece of shit from the cliche makeup and camera shot.

10. I almost NEVER buy stinkers.
But this was the year I found one.

One of their songs (whatever the popular one is) grew on me over time, until I decided I really liked it. Figured the rest of the album must be pretty tight too. Boy howdy. That was a mistake.

11. I admit to not really liking Tori Amos' "The Beekeeper."
At all. First time that's happened with a Tori record. Strange, as I've loved all of her other ones, even the mediocre ones. This one--it's not that the songs sucked, it's that they were really, really sad, but not good enough to be both sad and enjoyable, if that makes sense. Weird experience, and definitely disappointing.

19. Ben Folds - "Songs For Silverman"
I'm a huge fan, loved his last CD, and really liked the first single ("Landed"). But I have only been able to get through the rest of the CD twice. Pretty lackluster.

21. Yung Wun "Dirtiest, Thirstiest"
Bought it for the really great Rap cut "Tear It Up" with David Banner and Lil Flip, as it's a great party song. But the rest of the album really bites; no wonder they held it back four months from the previous release date. Will not buy another hip hop album; just the individual tracks I like online.

22. Willy Mason
Where the Humans Eat

I bought it on the strength of 'Oxygen' (link to lyrics below) and was sorely let down by the rest of the album. Now I treat it as if it's a single, if I play it at all.
