2. No. And, I think it means you get to go home.
At least in Virginia, that is how it works.

3. I would give them a second chance... Sometimes bad days just HAPPEN....
really.

If they want another shot at it, be kind to them as you would like someone to be kind to you, or someone you love.

Unless they're republican.

6. I've had people call me from the turnpike
and I was always very nice to them. Be kind on the way up, because you never know who you might meet on the way down.

Plus interviewees are nervous and that might impair their directional skills. ;)

7. I'm so bad about stuff like this, I've been known to drive to the place
ahead of time, often days in advance, so I'll know exactly where it is and how to get there. Being nervous about an interview, driving to an unfamiliar place, and being lost on top of that would probably put me over the edge!

8. UPDATE!
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 09:56 AM by kick-ass-bob
 to have an update on this silly thing.

The interview went quite well, the person was very nice and competent - and I didn't hold anything against them for getting lost.

:D

17. You have my sympathy.
The new trainee may take many hours of careful guidance with your experienced personnel which slows their productivity.
Of course every hour of training increases the value of the correct choice.

Good luck in finding exactly the right individual for your company.

9. Ha! Another on the list of things to NOT do during a job interview.....
Last week someone who was to be interviewed in my building could not
figure out how to get out of the parking garage (admittedly, it is confusing).
The interviewee solved the problem by pulling the fire alarm, causing about
150 people to have to exit the building for no reason. :eyes:

10. On job interviews and finding the building.
Years ago I worked with a woman who went for a job interview at a building in the first block of a street I'll call North Jones. Never very good at directions, she drove to the same numbered building on South Jones and said she was there for an interview. The company at that location was in the midst of a massive hiring effort and the receptionist just shooed the lost woman into the queue. About halfway through the interview she realized it wasn't the same job, but it sounded interesting and she needed work, so she continued without letting on. She was hired and had a ten year career with the company -- all because she went to the wrong building.

11. you wouldn't have if he never found it
we were holding a job meeting for a big road/bridge/parking lot project at newark airport. the traffic engineers were supposed to attend the meeting. about 10 minutes before the meeting the phone rings and its the traffic engineer, he's lost and can't find newark airport. (in north jersey all roads lead to newark airport). i start asking him questions about where he was, he starts describing his surroundings.."i'm in a parking lot, there's an ikea, a kids r us, some sports place. i see the turnpike, and a sign for exit 13..."

i stopped him there. "did you get off at exit 13? turn around."
there was a pause.
"do you see a big facility with some planes?"
another silent pause...
"yeah, i see a big airport.............oh. i'll be there in 10 minutes."

the traffic engineer who designed the roads on our project didn't realize that he was across the street from newark airport.

18. Here's another question:
Why can't people, presumably college educated people who clearly have good jobs, READ THE FUCKING SIGN ON THE DOOR TO MY OFFICE?!!

All day long I have people waltzing in asking "Is this XYZ Company?"

I don't know, dipshit--is that what it said on the door? NO? Oh. Well I guess that answers that now doesn't it? Give me your little MBA havin' hand so I can stop what I was doing and lead you to your precious meeting.

(I wouldn't care if it was just once in a while, but lately it's been 3-4 times a DAY. I'm just going to start locking my door. I swear to god.)

23. I'm gonna say "NO" and here's why
You don't get that many chances for a job interview. Back in 1996 I knew I wanted to get out of the waitressing business and finally find a place for my full time job. My strategy was 100/10/1: 100 Resumes, 10 leads, 1 job. (Ultimately I did 120 resumes for 7 leads which netted 2 interviews and ultimately my job).

Knowing how much work I put into finding that job, I would never EVER let anything as dumb as not finding the building standing in the way of getting it. My first job interview fortunately was only 3 miles from home but even still, the night before I drove to the location to assure that I knew exactly where I was going the next day. For that interview I arrived 15 minutes early.

My second interview was with a contracting company in Wilmington but the position they wanted me for was located about 20 minues from my home. But I still had to drive 75 minutes down to Wilmington for the interview, so doing a drive-by the night before to ensure I knew where I was going wasn't a possiblity.

So instead, I left about 3 hours before the interview (I was living about 90 minutes north of Wilmington). It took me about 2 hours for me to get to Wilmington and find the building where the company was located. So after I parked and ensured I knew where I was going - I stopped by a coffee house 2 blocks away and grab some decaf tea and a bagel and relaxed a bit before going into the interview. I was also 15 minutes early for that one.

Ultimately I received offers from both places but the Contracting one was a much better deal.

If someone really wants the job they'll do everything in their power to ensure that they'll be to the interview on time. I'm notorious for being "10 minutes late", but when it comes to Interviews I'd rather sit around in a coffeehouse for an hour waiting to go into the interview than to be running around frantic cause I can't find the place.

It's a tough market and it's that important
