and I have a bad memory of some of these things but could that have been Josie's? Rotollo's was pretty good, too. I think they were on 5th in Grandview. Panzera's is (was?) on 1st Ave. in Grandview. I'd even take Donato's and Massey's over what passes for pizza in these parts.

God I miss real pizza!!

Will have to check it out next time I am back in the state. I really need to get down there on a nostalgia tour...beautiful part of the country, NE Iowa...

41. Indeed. Always amazed me how fast the scenery changed, once you
get away from the river...it gets all flat and featureless. But from SW Minnesota/SE Wisconsin/NE Iowa all the way down the Mississippi, it's just awesome. My dad's last parish was a little country church near Dorchester, right up by the MN line, in hills that rolled up and down like a coaster at the fair, and woodland and farmland for miles...not the spectacular kind of beauty one sees in the mountains, or on the coast, but a quiet and peaceful beauty...never get tired of it. I live now near Mankato MN and the topography here reminds me very much of home...river valleys, bluffs, woodlands and farmlands...
I love the midwest!

6. Huey's. But it no longer exists.
This guy used to race motorcycles. He made pizza to support his racing. Fantastic. I have spent the last fifteen years trying to duplicate it. Can't do. But in the meantime, I've created something that's pretty good. A sour dough, cheddar, olive, bell pepper, mushroom. With a red sauce from someone at DU. It's a DU pizza.
I couldn't wait for it to cool off. Sloppy.

Anything in a restaurant or frozen is gonna be a lot greasier. I just love the taste of these things. A lot of folks would say that the sauce is bland, but it's just right for me--sometimes with extra garlic and parmesan.

The crust is nice and thin and it's very greasy- so much so that one has to "fold it". The sauce has a tangy edge to it, but not so much that one does not taste the oregano and basil. The cheese is usually mozzarrella or something that will "toast" well. OMG! :9

40. The late great "Tony's Little Venice" in East Flatbush Brooklyn
Best. Pizza. Eva.
Just a perfect Brooklyn slice ( and it doesn't get better than that!)

Around these parts, I like Emilio's because they have a nice thin crisp crust but they are too far away for take out or delivery because it gets soggy in the box.

45. My High School job was
at Little Caesars. The best pizza we made was Pepperoni, Ham, Red Onion, Green Chili, Jalapeno, Pineapple, and Mushrooms. Awesome crew pie!!! Plus if helping with the morning preps, take the biggest fresh mushrooms, pull out the stems, pack in the cheese, bacon, green chili, and put the garlic butter on top and run them through the oven. MMMMMMMM, YUMMY!!!!! Stuffed mushrooms to die for!!!!!!!

46. Pepi's in New Haven. CT
Coke fired brick oven. The kind that is never shut down cause if it is, it takes 2 days to get it back to a stable 700 degrees.

Best pizza south of there (Excepting NY and NJ) is Ciro's in South Miami, Near The Falls Shopping center. Best dough, best sauce, best fucking pizza.

BTW...Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Godfathers, Little Caesars and any of the other chains.....

ALL MAKE CRAP PIZZA!

Especially compared to properly made pizza. Every New Yorker and New Jerseyite will know what i am talking about.

47. There was a place in Dallas, around 1996, on Upper Greenville
I can't even remember the name anymore. It's been gone for many years. They had the most incredible gourmet pizzas, and they delivered. There was a seafood pizza with scallops; there were several very unusual pizzas with stuff like peas and carrots, all of them mouth-wateringly good, vastly superior to all other pizza I've ever had. How they ever went out of business is beyond me, because on a Friday or Saturday night you might wait 90 minutes for a delivery, they were so busy. But it was always piping hot and sinfully delicious.

Whoever ran that place was a pizza god.

68. I usually get onions, olives, and peppers,
but this one time in college I had these crazy pizza cravings and the only toppings I wanted were onions and pineapple. I didn't want the olives and peppers; I didn't want Canadian bacon. So I finally gave in and ordered it.

It was the best pizza *ever*. This was in Walla Walla, WA, so they used big chunks of Walla Walla sweets.

I have never eaten so much pizza in my life, and I've never ordered that combination again. I'm afraid it just won't be as good as the memory.

76. Lombardi's in Philly
Everything in the pie is either fresh or from Italy - they even use mozzarella fresca. Coal fired oven. Founded by the guy who opened the first pizzaria in the United States. When the gods on Olympus get tired of ambrosia, they send out for Lombardi's pizzas. I'll take mine with sausage, mushrooms and onions.

90. Beau Jo's
in Colorado. Idaho Springs, and also some suburbs of Denver, I believe. They leave honey on your table for eating the crust end. The rest of the crust is really thin, but the part you hold is HUGE. And ooooh so yummy.

He said "Go forth, and divide into eight slices, this pizza pie which I have given to you this day, for it is for all the creatures of your household, and that is why there is only sausage on half." (Little Romans 11:11)
