Computer question: old AMD Athlon vs. old Intel Celeron
What I have to work with is 2 computers, both about 5 years old. (All I really need a computer for is basic web surfing, and any PC games I own are as old as these machines.)

What I need to do is choose which computer to put the best parts into. Both are running Windows ME, and I have 512 mb RAM and a 7200 RPM hard drive to put into my final choice.

So it comes down to processors. The HP has an Intel Celeron 800 mhz, and the Compaq has an AMD Athlon 749 mhz.

I realize those are slow by today's standards, but I don't want to spend any money, and the Intel has met my needs so far. But if the AMD is considered superior, even at 51 mhz less speed, I'll switch to that.

Opinions?

1. I have a friend in I/T
and she says to avoid Celeron if at all possible. I know her well enough to respect her views, so I avoid it.

2. Those processors date...
...from the days when Athlon wasn't seen as a huge threat to Intel, and Intel didn't have to try. Since then, competition has improved Intel quality, but I'm guessing your old Athlon would slightly outperform its Intel counterpart.

I use only Athlons to this day, however. I'm biased.

3. In my own experience
I use AMD processors because they are a little less expensive, and oftentimes perform better than Intel's. Besides, the Celeron was introduced as a non-upgradable chip, whereas the Athlon is upgradable. Celeron wasn't really made for people who knew anything about computers--it was made to introduce non-tech oriented people to the modern world of computing by providing them with an entire setup which was P&P out of the box.

4. "Celeron wasn't really made for people who knew anything about computers"
That's me. For instance, I didn't know processors had upgradeable chips. I'll do some research into the possibility of upgrading the chip in the Athlon.

Thank you!

8. Well then in that case
I'll be sure to keep them separated.
