Am I funny for not naming the city of my birth?
Even though I gave the name of someone from there and it's first. I mean, anyone can find it from the information I gave. If I am paranoid about being non anonymous from that information, I am sort of defeating the purpose, aren't I?

1. Depends on consistency.
If you have ever given it out even once, the info is out there someplace.

I've been online since 1989, and am listed a million different places. And yet, I've never had any trouble online except for perhaps a lot more spam and junk mail. It's a toss-up: we're all going to be in the system from now on, anyhow. But it's all pretty much an individual choice.

2. Caution is a good thing. Your gut feeling is the best indicator.
Your first obligation in life is to take care of yourself. You're jake with me, Nikia.

3. Just because someone knows where you were born
Doesn't mean he knows where you live now. Also, I mention I live in Saginaw, but I don't include my street address.
John
I don't think you're funny about it, though -- some people aren't comfortable giving that kind of information out over the net.

4. I haven't given that info. either
I have this strange fear of the internet which makes me randomly refuse to give out information. Anyone could figure out who I am if they want to search-- I've said my hometown dozens of times, my Party involvement, where I work, pictures, etc.

But, because I was born in a town of 1,100 people I won't say it. I also never tell my name because it's unusual.

Bottom line.... my "security" measures are useless, but they make me feel better. ;)

6. My family's been in this house since 1961
I figure that anyone who wants to kick my ass already knows where I live. I'm more concerned about who I'm dealing with out here in the real world than about something that might happen due to my internet activity.
John
But a few security measures are a good idea, even if all they do is serve to make you feel better. Kind of like not blabbing confidential information over a cel phone.

5. I feel rather fatalistic about internet security....
I don't worry about posting a lot of personal info here, because no-one knows or can know, my address and phone number...They are unlisted..

Shopping is another matter...I am VERY careful about shopping on secure sites only...There what you do can have a large impact.
