These guys don't get it
US conservatives round on Bush over Katrina aid pledges

US president George Bush's promise to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf coast "higher and better" has triggered a wave of anxiety among conservatives in his own party, who are shocked at the expansion of the federal role in disaster relief.

Yesterday Mr Bush led the country in a day of prayer for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Washington's national cathedral, declaring: "The destruction of this hurricane was beyond any human power to control, but the restoration of broken communities and disrupted lives now rests in our hands." But his ambitious pledge the night before to lead "one of the largest reconstruction efforts the world has ever seen" has dismayed many of his own followers.

Some Republicans are voicing their unease. Senator Tom Coburn declared: "I don't believe that everything that should happen in Louisiana should be paid for by the rest of the country."

So far, Mr Slivinski said, Republican rebels in Congress could be counted "on two hands and one foot" but he predicted that, as congressional elections approach next year, concern will rise when leaders face the rank and file, who still believe in small government and balanced budgets.

It was this small government, everybody should fend for themselves ideology that caused the outrage of people being left to die in New Orleans! These guys just don't get it!

1. Tom Coburn is a nut.
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 06:25 AM by Heidi
He's a rightwing extremist, no different than the Muslim extremists his party is fond of vilifying.

Further, as an obstetrician/gynecologist, he believes he's better prepared to make women's health care decisions than we women ourselves.

A few of Sen. Coburn's other ill-informed assertions:

About silicone breast implants: "If you have them, you're healthier than if you don't. That is what the ultimate science shows...In fact, there's no science that shows that silicone breast implants are detrimental and, in fact, they make you healthier."

He's a homophobe: "The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power ... That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today. Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That's a gay agenda."

Self-appoinnted arbiter of who is and isn't Cherokee Indian: "Alright, listen, I know the tribal issues," he said on August 21, 2004. "I was a congressman where most of the Indians are in this state. The problem is, most of them aren't Indians."

2. I know you can't answer this
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 06:51 AM by billyskank
but I have to ask. What on earth do gay people and abortion have to do with each other?

It seems the problem is not only that he's a bigot. It's that he's also an idiot. :(

4. From my understanding, it's reproductive freedom.
It is a loose association, yes, but once they get away with rescinding some laws or making new laws, they'll make more and more.

Of course, big laws and bureaucracy are okay for repubichairs when they don't affect them. Especially when they're in power and can only stand to gain from them.

9. The only cogent explanation is that Tom Coburn and his ilk
are vicious, mean and in the business of perverting Christianity for their own gain.

8. Tom Coburn can't answer it either, without resorting

to the Old Testament. Someone needs to ask Mr. Coburn, "What would Jesus do?" (I personally don't believe Jesus would condemn gays, women who've had abortions, or any of the other folks Sen. Coburn is so fond of blaming for the downfall of western civilization.)

10. It seems these guys don't read the New Testament much
if at all. Funny, I thought that was what Christianity was all about. But what do I know! :silly:

3. Oh, so that means I don't need to donate money then? And these too:
Tommy No-Tool there said so himself: "I don't believe that everything that should happen in Louisiana should be paid for by the rest of the country." Oops. Selfish prat...

Oh, if a disaster hits a part of England, surely the rest of England would pitch in? As usual, England or any world country would show the United States elected officials what TRUE compassion and assistance is.

Hey Tommy No_T, since you're adamant about people not pitchin' in, do us a favor and demand that ALL corporate subsidy programs (particularly for the Fortune 500 companies, they don't need corporate welfare in the slightest) be rescinded. That will put big relief on wasteful government spending and get the balance re-budgeted; the debt being paid back off too.

Or, what if Tommy Dearest's neighborhood was wiped out by a big-ass tornado, would he change his mind then?

Curious George there also seems to think we have some sort of weather control system already: "The destruction of this hurricane was beyond any human power to control..." Okey doke... :eyes: Though global warming, one of mankind's less intentional creations, may indeed have had something to do WITH Katrina's strength...

7. Oh, "they" get it.
This is just that portion of Resluglicans that's comprised of the True Assholes. When all is said and done, their back pocket is their chapel. It's all well and good to help the needy, unless such help inhibits their ability to get their pimped-out entertainment center and their bi-monthly bikini wax.
