What weather threat most endangers you?
I couldn't post this as a poll at Level 3, but it might be better as a regular topic anyway. Include earthquakes as an option.

Being from Southeastern PA, there's flooding, but I am on higher ground. Biggest threat would probably be from tornadoes, though that's just a moderate risk. It's humid here, but that's more of an annoyance than threat.

I'd say that's the biggest threat of any. And the Repukes want more - just like in the 80s. :grr:

2. In my opinion that is the best thing about Britain
Its weather is so blessedly middle-of-the-road. It never gets particularly nice in the summer, and it never gets particularly harsh in the winter, and most of the time it's sorta dull depressing grey rainy shitty kind of weather. I'm really learning to appreciate that now.

17. Yeah hurricane
A hurricane in Britain means a load of trees get blown down and half a dozen people get killed. That's bad news to be sure, but it's far from catastrophic.

The flooding is bad, I'll grant you that. It's because the fucking property developers will insist on building on flood plains.

11. Agreed - but it may not stay that way
Some of the climatologists looking at global warming suggest that a shift in the Gulf-Stream (which is what keeps us nice and warm in winter) may well be upon us shortly. :scared:

5. Hurricanes and ice storms
The Carolinas get the occasional hurricane. As far inland as we are, they can still be Cat 3, but it's usually the flooding.

Truely nasty Tstorms with gale-force winds and lightening snapping power lines and trees.

In the winter, Ice Storms are fun with the same results, no power and downed trees.

10. #1: tornados. I've been in a couple already
A tree fell on me and fractured my skull in the first one. I was two years old, and it is my earliest memory. And it's scary as hell.

#2 would have to be blizzards. Up here in MN, we get at least one big one a year that shuts down everything for a day. Thankfully, being a lifelong Minnesotan, I also know how to survive in case I get stuck in one. It just comes with the territory, I guess.

We have had severe thunderstorms that have caused just as much damage as many tornadoes.

In the winter - blizzards and sub-zero temperatures.

20. There was a wild storm that ripped through
while I was home in July...can't remember the date, but it was a Saturday, and my folks had just left for their health club, so I'm guessing it was around 10-ish A.M. when it hit St. Cloud before heading for the Cities.

The sky was black...and then it turned green. It was the first storm in years that really scared me, and I'd forgotten how a green sky could make me feel. It cured me of my "back home storms" nostalgia, at least temporarily.

25. I put the kids in the basement, in the one room without windows.
I went upstairs to call my dad (my cell phone didn't work well in the basement), because I wanted to make sure they'd made it to the club before it hit.

I told him I was upstairs looking out the front windows, and he literally ordered me to hang up and get the hell downstairs. I'm lucky he had a flashlight on his desk, because the power went out as soon as I got downstairs and the kids were pretty scared.

26. Yes, that one was SCARY
I was at work in DT St Paul, and we could hardly see a 1/4 mile in either direction. It was dark as night, and you could see the wall clouds right above our building. At least one of them looked like it was starting to form a funnel. THAT was some scary stuff.

19. Probably earthquakes.
I live in the general Boise area - the Treasure Valley in southwest Idaho.

We get very little in the way of snow here. That's up in the mountains (the five winters I've been here, there has been only one day each with enough snow for a snowman). There are sometimes ice storms, but nothing that's impeded daily activities longer than a day or so.

Tornadoes? They've been known to happen here, but it's very, very rare.

No hurricanes.

There's been a couple of earthquakes since I've lived here, but so mild I didn't even feel them.

We've had droughts, but again, pretty mild compared to elsewhere.

Wisconsin has been hit by several powerful tornados over the years; luckily none have come through my neck of the woods, but it could happen. Also, we live close to a river, so if it floods we could lose our basement.

an area prone to earthquakes AND volcanic activity:

Legend has it that the patron saint of Ecuador once said that Quito will be destroyed neither by volcanos nor earthquakes, but by bad government. If you look at the merry-go-round of presidents of Ecaudor recently, it's hard not to agree.
