Little rabbit foo foo
I work on a college campus, where motor vehicle traffic is at a minimum. Because of this, there is a large population of over-fed squirrels. Most of the time, I don't even notice them.

I was just walking to the cafeteria, when it occurred to me that a particular squirrel didn't look just right--no big tail.

Sure enough, it was a bunny.

I've been here 18 years, and never have I seen a bunny on campus.

2. We had a squirrel at Beloit with no tail...
He'd apparently lost it in some sort of on-the-job accident thanks to OSHA deregulation or some such. "Bloody Stump," we called him (cute, I know). He first appeared, sans tail, my sophomore year; and he managed to make it through two summers with his balance all thrown off.

Then one day, senior year, a friend of mine found Stumpy on the sidewalk, dead. I know it sounds strange, but there was quite a bit of mourning surrounding the passing of our rodentine friend. After all, squirrels outnumber students at Beloit, and he'd pretty much become our defacto mascot.

BLOODY STUMP IS DEAD -- LONG LIVE BLOODY STUMP!

6. There's albino squirrels in Carbondale? Awesome!
I knew there were some in Olney, IL, but I never knew there were any in Carbondale. I'll ask my sister if she has ever seen any while she was going to school there. That's pretty cool. Maybe Illinois should be nationally known for it's albino squirrels.

7. There are black squirrels in Ohio.
I see a bunch of 'em when I'm home around Christmas time. They're really quite striking in the snow.

8. heh
that's hilarious.

I saw a guy sitting in front of a huge gov't building on Constitution Ave (in Washington DC, I mean) feeding the squirrels by hand. They would come right up to him and take pieces of bread out of his hand. I guess he had been doing it for a while and they were familiar with him and trusted him.

12. I do that on my back porch
I put out peanuts for the squirrels on my back porch, and occasionally one will not run away when I go outside. They'll sometimes take peanuts right out of my hand. They are so cute!!

11. Rabbits have taken over Grant Park in Chicago
and the area immediately south. They are devouring the landscaping and the bark off trees. The city is going mad, wondering what to humanely do about the problem. I have often seen rabbits walking home from work, and once I saw one dash across Michigan Avenue at 14th Street.

My son and his playmates were treated to a rare sight this fall. I found a little rabbit hole with five baby bunnies in the park. I alerted my son to this and immediately the hole was surrounded with five preschoolers on their hands and knees peering into the hole. They were good; kept fairly quiet and did not touch the sleeping babies.

They were gone the next day. But what a privilege to have seen it.
