Dwight Yoakam Kicks Nashville's Pansy Ass AGAIN.
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 05:09 AM by dbt
Because of what I do for a living, I can usually get any CD I want for free. But I shelled out good money a couple of weeks ago for Dwight's new one, "Blame The Vain," without first hearing a single note of it. Boy, does this thing KILL! The Irish term for it is Nasty Good.

There are no songs about cute kids or good old dogs or waving Daddy's American flag--the pap that Nashville churns out. No, Dwight seems to have gotten his heart stomped flat over the last few years and he's letting it out now! His trademark "starin' at the wall and bellerin' " delivery is in fine form and good old Hurtin' is what this CD is all about.

"Blame The Vain," "Intentional Heartache," "Does It Show" (with BARITONE guitar, bawm-bawm-bawm!) and "I'll Pretend" are good 'uns, but the one that sticks with me is "She'll Remember." It succeeds in SPITE of its cute Britspeak intro, complete with sythesizer.

And speaking of Brit, Dwight has a new lead guitar player who seems to have grown up listening to Revolver. I swear he's playing through a Vox AC30 Top Boost amp!

Betcha don't hear any of these songs on the radio, unless you're blessed with an Americana station. Damn shame that, because "Blame The Vain" is REAL country music. I give it six out five stars.

2. I'm buying this today!
I've always had the hugest crush on him. Love his music.

Thanks for the rec.

5. I don't think you'll be disappointed,
although the CD could have used some more low end, IMO. But that's why the Goddess gave us tone controls, I reckon.

3. Not a fan of Dwight's music...
But he seems like a pretty cool guy. Did you seem him on The Daily Show? Absolutely hilarious.

6. He had me from "Honky Tonk Man."
And to hear the Beatle echoes (check the guitar he's holding) through this CD is just gravy!

7. The CD, "Transcendental Blues" by Steve Earle about 4 years ago,
has some real Beatlesque tunes. Backward Guitar and all that stuff.

10. Thanks for the reminder!
I gotta get that one for sure. "Vain" is not as overt, but the guitar player is all about that "Nowhere Man" kind of tone. Delicious!

8. I noticed that blonde epi he was holding...
I bought his first CD and played the hell outta it and I don't like country music. Like pretty much everything he's done and, being the son of a WV coal miner who moved north for a better life, I really relate to his music.

"Readin', writin' and Route 23..."

9. I saw Dwight Yoakam 13 or 14 years back
at a stadium. He seemed obsessed with his tight jeans and good looks, kept mugging for the ladies.

But when he started a song, it was pure magic. This is what real country music is about.

Buenos Noches from a Lonely Room...

11. I read the most blasphemous review along about then:
"Dwight Yoakam can do more with one knee than Elvis could with his whole body." Sharon Stone must've thought that, too.

13. He's not bad for an Ohio boy
Well, he wasn't born here, but pretty much grew up here. People think we can't do real country, but it's there.

14. It's anywhere that people FEEL it!
There's some real good country music in the West of Ireland, for instance (and the whiskey is pretty decent, too).

16. If you really think about it
Country (and a lot of "roots" music) came from Ireland.

17. Shhhhhhhhhh! You'll get them stirred up again.
Then we'll be up all night swapping stories, with them claiming they invented bluegrass and how we don't know the first thing about making whiskey or racing horses...

20. I'm not a big country music fan.
But I love Dwight Yoakum. Last time I drove the Alcan Highway, in the early 90's, I listened to his Guitars, Cadillacs tape it seemed like half the way.

Plus, he mentioned once on the Tonight Show he's a vegetarian. B-)

21. Dwight is great
For all of us who hate this insipid crap they call country music nowadays, he shows where it's really at.

His eerie ability to portray redneck assholes in the movies is also amazing.

I had to watch "Sling Blade" twice before I recognized him. And you know he was exposed to a few RNAHs growing up!

25. I wasn't too sad to see his character get "bladed," mmmm-hmmm.
According to Billy Bob Thornton, that movie is pretty much a true story, set where he grew up and based on some real people that he knew before his family moved to Malvern.

Chances are, Yoakam's character had to be cleaned up a good bit for the movie; there are some unbelievable low-lifes out in the sticks around here. No telling how vicious the real guy was!

24. Dwight IS country music
That stuff coming out of Nashville is not country music. They've been imitating each other for so long, they've lost their way.

and pretty soon all you've got is a blurred image.
