1. Cindy Alexander!
BTW - Just got back from a show with her in Modesto. Kicked major butt! It was worth the 5 1/2 hour drive from LA and getting up @ 7am to drive her to the airport. It was so much fun. None of us got to bed until after 1am. I love this wild rock and roll life that I get to have from time to time.

3. Cross your fingers!
There is a possibilty of a tour. I can't spill a lot of the beans, because it's not yet a done deal. But I am praying that something big happens.

BTW - Another very cool indy artist http://www.circelink.com/

She a local here in LA as well and a friend of Cindy's. She's fantastic.

1 AM?
First, I don't know what an independent music artist is. Does it mean no label, no nothing?

Also, rockers going to bed at 1 is pretty good but not all that rock. I mean, in my field, the show doesn't even end until 2. The band is lucky to get out of there before 3 (assuming the drinks keep flowing), and every one is lucky to get to bed before 4.

In indianapolis, when I went to bed, the sun was up and the birds chirping. 6:30 I think.

All of my favorite independent artists live in my town.

7. Indie Artists
Independent artists are people that are not signed with any major record company. Some might have a distribution deal with a company, but they still don't have to answer to the demands of the record company.

One of the reasons my friend Cindy has not signed is because she will not give up her music rights or leave her band behind. The major record companies are slime. They rip the artists off and make them record crap they want to market or they market crap artists (Britney Spears).

9. OK, but
there are a ton of indie record labels out there.

That makes the list way to big for me to generate for you.

I mean, superchunk, archers of loaf, miracle of 86, bright eyes, cursive, polvo, pipe, polyphonic spree, cat power, arsonists, bloinde redhead, yo la tengo, etc etc etc.

11. You don't have to go through them all of course..
If you have a lot. This board is here to introduce artists, though, so mention as many as you feel like. :)

10. That's one reason I made this board
I'm very mad at the RIAA right now. You can hear a lot of independent artists at cdbaby.com.

12. CD Baby ROCKS!
They've been very supportive for Cindy. They are even processing credit card transactions for her when we sell CD's at shows.

I love where they talk about the special treatment they'll give your CD. It's too good to be true, but still cute.

15. Speaking of babies ....
After the show last weekend, Cindy was signing autographs for the people that bought CD's. This couple had their baby with them and I guess they were going to change his/her diaper. Before they did that, they had Cindy autograph the outside of the diaper!

I told them "Save it and sell it on E-Bay! She's gonna be famous real soon!"

16. Cindy seems like such a nice artist
Many on major labels have attitudes, according to interviewers. They won't mention names much, but Edna Gunderson was talking about newcomers. Oh well - I'll still enjoy the music.

17. She really is a nice person.
Funny as hell too. I got to know her so quickly it made my head spin. The first time I saw her perform I was in a trance. The next week the played the shit out of her CD. I kept calling my friend Tina (the percussionist and back-up singer) and going on and on about how great they are.

Every up coming show, I would go help put of posters in stores, pass out fliers at bars and so on. Cindy was just estatic about it. By the time I started up my Yahoo group fan club, I was considered part of "the family" as the bass player calls us. The whole band is just a wonderful group of people. Very close knit bunch. I'm thrilled to call them my friends now.

There's probably 40 or so I can't think of right now. None of these artists are on Major Labels, and they are making the best music out there at this moment. Check them all out!

18. Gerry O'Beirne
If you listen to Maura O'Connell, he's the one who writes the best songs on her records and also plays 12-string on them:

20. If you like island-type, laid-back music, go visit
www.migrationmusic.com

There's a whole number of musicians out there who don't just play Jimmy Buffett covers, they have their own superb originals, their own record labels, their own websites, and their own followings:

Jim Morris
Sunny Jim White
Eileen Quinn
Danny Morgan
Gene Mitchell
The Barefoot Man
St. Somewhere

Etc.

And Migration Music also has Internet radio: www.migrationradio.com

Radio Margaritaville also plays their stuff.

22. Holly Near
At the risk of revealing myself as the tie-dyed, tree-hugging, liberal sap that I am, I confess that I'm Holly Near fan.

Sure, some of her stuff is sickly-sweet, but "I Ain't Afraid" and "Standard White Jesus" are powerful anthems against the horrifying ways some politicians are using religion these days.

23. Ani, Shannon Worrell
Ani is the Queen of Indieland, no?

Shannon Worrell is a West Virginian singer/songwriter.

Also, now that Nick Cave is on Epitaph, I think he qualifies as indie, too.
