63. It is a game.
It is not an athletic competition. But then, you could argue that golf is no more athletic than pool, the only difference is that the area of play is a lot larger. How about bowling? Not much athleticism here, OK maybe a little but not much.

Whether a sport is interesting depends on how much you get emotionally involved in the competition, and it is hard to get involved in watching something that you don't understand.

46. Do they Still have "Candlepins for Cash" in Massachusetts?
What passes for bowling in MA is candlepins -- little pins shaped
like candles. You can send the ball right through the middle and
miss them all. What twisted sadist invented this game? Even if
you do knock them over, they don't make any noise. Where's the fun in that?

They even used to put it on TV there. I suppose they still do.

That, actually, is even more boring than golf to watch on TV.

it's unreal. (I played it in New Hampshire many years ago.)

I recall that "Candlepins for Cash" ended its run some considerable time back. I'm sure somewhere in New England, it's on some local cable sports channel. :) Now I've gotta know.

On edit: Yup...local cable access. :)

Behind the Fence: Inside the Canned Hunt Industry
By Nicole G. Paquette

Dreaming of your next vacation? How about a wildlife safari where you can view exotic and endangered species from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia? No time for a trip around the world? No problem! Your tour can take place right here in the U.S.A. As an added bonus, you can stalk these animals in a pen, shoot them at point-blank range, and take their mounted heads home as trophies. For a price, this shameful sojourn can be yours, courtesy of the federal government.

Although this outrageous scenario sounds illegal, it's not. It's a "canned hunt," and it's big business.

A canned hunt is a commercial event that takes place on private land, often called a "ranch," where animals are fenced in and unable to escape. Hunters pay a fee to the ranch operator for a guaranteed kill. Canned hunt victims typically include deer, elk, and other "big game" animals -- including endangered and threatened species.

Of the 12 U.S. ranches holding current or recent government-issued endangered species permits, 11 are located in Texas and 1 is in Florida. The animal most commonly hunted at these ranches is the barasingha, or "swamp deer," native to India and Nepal. Other targeted endangered or threatened species include Eld's bow-antlered deer, red lechwe, Arabian oryx, and several species of antelope. The going rate for a canned hunt varies; one ranch website advertises a guaranteed kill of a barasingha for $4,000.

more...and how you can help make this illegal at the link :hi:

22. Frimble
Most.Boring.Game.Ever.

Leave it up to someone to make a game of watching paint dry on a wall.

Two teams paint a wall and then sit there and watch it dry. Whosever dries first and fastest wins. Meanwhile the commentators are making it sound like it's the most exciting thing in the world.

COMMENTATOR: And here is Evilina Tarago of the Pituta team approaching the wall. AND LOOK AT THAT!!! SHE JUST PERFORMED THE DOUBLE CRISSCROSS SWEEPING PATTERN!! NO ONE CAN BEAT THAT BEAUTIFUL STROKING TECHNIQUE. Will the Tuyito team be able to pick up?

COMMENTATOR 2: Oh Rubbi, that certainly is one heck of a move. It was in fact born by the world champion Frimble player in 1985, Doto Jipora, and has been tried and perfected by every succeeding Frimble player on the proffesional circuit. This is, by so far, the most perfect manuever since that time.

COMMENTATOR 1: Right, Right Linza, Let's see that on replay.

5 slow mo replays while commentators chat excitedly about the move.

Later in the game as they are watching the players watch their walls dry:

COMMENTATOR 1: It is three hours into the drying phase and so far the Tuyito team is in ahead!! Oh the suspension is surmountable! Who'll will go home with the Frimble World Champs Paintbrush?!! Who knows? Only time will tell.

COMMENTATOR : Meanwhile, the Pitutas are waiting in earnest for their wall to dry but the extra slathering that they did may actually hampered their game. They are behind the Tuyitos! They aren't sure what to do and blowing or using any kind of drying device is illegal. So the only thing that they can do is pray that their wall somehow starts drying faster.

Yeah so it's really boring and I wouldn't watch it.

Oh...wait... my imagination's playing with me again.

Dee

67. You need the right attitude to watch it
because it does involve a lot of skill, and tactics - the precision needed is obvious, and having to work out what will happen with several balls is far from straight-forward; and there's also a lot of choices to be made about playing for a safe option, or taking a risk and ending up giving your opponent an easy situation.

But I agree it can be slow-moving, and I couldn't sit down to watch it for a long time. If it's any consolation, they now use camera angles from minature cameras in the pockets, so you see the lineup of balls from the players' points of view.
