Black Girls Can Become Presidents

When I was a little black girl in the 1950's a teacher once asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. My answer? "President of the United States". My teacher told me to sit down and think of another answer, "colored people can't become Presidents". After class, the teacher took me aside and said "don't you EVER say something like that again!" I went home crying and told my mother what the teacher said. My mother, also a school teacher, told me "do you actually believe what she told you?" My mother knew all too well about being black and being a success. When my mother was a student teacher, she was also told the identical same thing. My mother later dealt with my teacher but I would learn a valuable lesson, black students could be easily discouraged and still are to this day.

Senator Carol Moseley-Braun is a candidate for President of the United States. She reminded me of that incident in my childhood. A woman of many historic titles, Ambassador Moseley-Braun seems like the kind of person you can approach with a hug, share a cup of tea, and talk for hours about public school education. Make no mistake, this African-American woman is one of the most brilliant high ranking public servants of all time.

Carol Moseley-Braun's vision for this country is vast. As she states: "I believe this country is on the wrong track. As a loyal American, I consider it my patriotic responsibility, at this critical time to stand up and speak truth to power."

Truth to Power? Now when is the last time I have heard the word "TRUTH" coming out of the mouths of our current administration? In fact, the very "election" of this pResident speaks "power" to manipulate "truth" and that is not what this country is about.

Carol Moseley-Braun knows how to run a country and she is very well qualified to do so.

Consider her extensive, extraordinary background.

Ms. Moseley-Braun graduated from Chicago Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois in 1969, and her law degree in 1972 from the University of Chicago. She joined the United States Attorney's office in Chicago in 1973 where her work in housing, environmental policies, health care reform, and civil rights won her over three-hundred (300) awards for achievements in public interest.

In 1978 she was elected to Illinois state legislature, the General Assembly. As a State Representative, she became recognized as a champion for education, governmental reform, and civil rights. In 1984 she proposed a moratorium on the application in Illinois of the death penalty. And in what became a landmark reapportionment case, Crosby vs. State Board of Elections, she successfully sued her own party and the state of Illinois on behalf of African American and Hispanic citizens.

In 1992 another historic first! Ms. Moseley-Braun became the first female, first African-American Democratic senator from Illinois. In the Senate, Carol Moseley-Braun built an exemplary legislative record, serving among others on the Finance, Banking and Judiciary Committees.

In 1998, after Carol Moseley-Braun was narrowly defeated in her race for re-election, President Clinton named her special consultant to the Department of Education on school construction - one of her longtime special concerns. She was then nominated to be U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, and confirmed by a vote of the full Senate, 98-2. In New Zealand, she was made an honorary member of the Te Atiawa Maori people.

When her ambassadorial assignment ended, Ms. Moseley-Braun returned to Alabama to rehabilitate and rescue her family farm. During that time, she started her business consultancy and began to teach political science. Carol Moseley-Braun returns today to the national forum animated by a sense of duty to the nation and a patriotic desire to serve. She is a self-made woman with more qualifications and more intelligence than the "selected" pResident that now occupies the White House.

Senator, Ambassador Carol Moseley-Braun is a candidate for President. From where this little black girl sits in the classroom, I feel vindication. I wonder if that teacher is still around?

CAROL FOR PRESIDENT

Remembering Barry White

It was a retro kind of Saturday for this Miss "Thang", as I was often referred. Black turtleneck, black bell bottoms and a fluffy fro. Oh, and the touch to finish it off, HUGE gold hoops adored my ears. As I inspected myself in the mirror, I nod with approval, 'yes, that's much better. I'm now rolling in a Apple Red shiny new Ford Pinto, stick. I was da bomb! I had my 8-track booming Barry White's sexy voice to the tune of "SATIN SOUL". I had to keep that jam going by the time I picked up a certain young man that I wanted to impress with both my sound system and my car. IT WORKED! Romance VIVA Barry White.

Now my beloved Barry is gone. He died Friday on the 4th of July 2003 at the age of 58.

For more on Barry White check out this link.

1. Hi Mina!
I was getting worried about ya, hon! Glad to see ya made it. Hope your weekend was great. Mine was good, took the kids up to my sister's place in NM and dropped them off for a month. Now I've got time to be a grown up for a bit and recharge my batteries before school starts in August. Long drive, though... holiday traffic added 2.5 hours to the trip back.

And now... on to the questions...

QUESTIONS OF THE LATE DAY

1. What Barry White songs do you like ?

-Just about all of them. I love his voice, it's so distinctive, but I'd have to go with the standard "Can't get enough of your love" as my all-time favorite.

2. What are your dinner plans for tonight?

-Dunno. I don't have to cook for anyone else but me, so it'll probably be something that isn't as healthy as normal.. who knows?

3. What are YOU wearing right NOW?

-Work clothes. Khaki shirt, jeans, and a labcoat made the nastiest color green you've ever seen. Hey, at least the coat is flame retardant.

Have a great rest of your day!
Sal

5. Hi there Sal! How are you today?
I always think about you and the girls on Monday. Sal, a green labcoat! I would like a labcoat in that color :) I like the comfort of Khaki shirts and jeans. Well, let me know what happens for dinner. I'm thinking Pizza tonight.

Thanks for dropping in Sal and hello to the girls :hi:

Love ya,

Mina :hi:

2. Hello!
1. What Barry White songs do you like ?

Heck, all of 'em.

2. What are your dinner plans for tonight?

Completely undecided, but as long as I don't have to cook.

3. What are YOU wearing right NOW?

Since I'm at work, I'm forced to wear proper attire. T-shirt, cargo shorts, slippers.

:D

Lucky.

Our coats are heavy and nasty and a real bear to work in when it's 105+ outside..... guess that's what I get for doing what I do, though.

3. Nice tribute to Barry.
Herbie Mann, and now Barry White. RIP.

Also, I like your thing on Carol Moseley Braun. If that teacher IS alive today, imagine how she'd feel if Braun won! Now, in this field of candidates, I have my favorites: Dean, Graham, Kucinich, Gephardt, and then Braun comes in fifth; nonetheless, I would love to see a black and/or a woman become President!

1. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love"
2. I'm going to a Mexican restaurant. I'll share the gas with you. Would you like some? :D
3. A shirt with the US flag; some black shorts; socks and shoes; and a watch, if that counts.

18. Sure! I would LOVE Mexican Food! Ummmmmm.
Thank you for your comments regarding the Carol Moseley-Braun commentary. I would love for a black and /or woman to become President in my lifetime.

Yes, so many music icons are gone. Herbie Mann, Barry White, Edwin Starr.

OK, you like Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" baby. Oh, I just love that song. His voice is velvet.

You are wearing a shirt with the US flag, very nice! I just purchased a shirt that is navy , white and red with stars on the navy part. It looks like a flag and I love it.

Oh, yes! The watch most definitely counts! :)

Enjoy your dining tonight.

Love ya,

21. Hello RB! How are you?
How is the weather in Manhattan? In Long Island it is HOT! So, I'm just keeping cool in the house and sipping lemonade that my Mother made.

So you just like THE man, Barry White. Me too RB. Who could not love that sexy smooth voice. Now your dinner plans are fruit and yogurt at your desk. I know the feeling RB. Many times it was a cup of yogurt at my desk OR no yogurt at all! Lynnesin has great taste, so I know the dress is da bomb!

Stay cool RB and I am looking forward to meeting you when I have an opportunity to travel into the city.

Love,

Mina :hi:

1. Barry White had more than one song? I thought they were all just versions of the same song. Just kidding; if Barry can't get you in the mood you are dead.

2. Being Monday, I am having dinner with my parental units located about an hour down the road. We have dinner most every Monday.

3. White dress shirt, charcoal gray slacks, black wingtips, grey tie, black boxer briefs, white t-shirt, gray socks, black belt, stainless steel watch, and a shit-eating grin! :D

I understand about the golf cart. You know I look forward to seeing it every Monday but we are just moving into our new DU2 home and we have to unpack. So, next week the Golf Cart drives to DU2!

Now this is true what you say about the Barry White songs. They DO sound alike. I think that's what makes him so great! I am so proud of the way the media covered his death. Barry White is a music ICON and his music will live on. I have several Barry White CD's and right in the middle of a July 4th dinner, his death was announced. The mood changed drastically in my house. Out of respect we played his music and just talked about our Barry White moments.
As you correctly point out, it is mood music.

Your dinner plans sound nice.

And your stylin today! White dress shirt and charcoal gray slacks. Those nice finishing touches are the shoes, tie and watch.

Have a great evening and thanks for dropping in to say hello!

Love,

Mina :hi:

12. Good Monday DU
I'm glad Carol Mosely Braun is running for President. I am insulted when anyone says she is only running to take away votes from Al Sharpton. She offers wisdom and ideas to the Dem platform and hope for all those little girls wondering why they can't be President.

I can remember asking a similar question of my teachers. Why can't a girl be President? I got a similar answer. :-(

Answers:

1. I like all his songs. I listened to an NPR interview with him this morning. He was a classy man.

2. I don't have any plans yet.

3. Shorts and a T-shirt. Anyone guess that I'm working from home today.

23. THANK YOU CALLY! THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT!
I might as well say it too. Carol Mosely Braun is well qualified to run as President of the United States. I too am insulted when I hear others state that she is running to take votes away from the other candidates. Funny, when she ran for the IL senate seat, many people said she wasn't going to make it . Well, after a VERY long night of "COUNTING VOTES" she won. Thank goodness the votes were counted THAT time.

I really appreciate your comments Cally and thanks for defending her candidacy.

OK, you are a Barry White fan like me! :) :) I did not know about the NPR interview. Perhaps I can obtain a video from NPR.

Suggestions for dinner? Cool fruit salad perhaps?

Shorts and T-shirt, the perfect outfit for a perfect day :).

Thanks so much for dropping in to see me.

I love Carol Mosey-Braun and Mina, your are correct, she is more qualified than Bush. She is not the daughter of a President but a daugher who worked hard to become the African-American icon that she is.

I just saw Carol Mosley-Braun on MSNBC today ( Buchanan and Press). Pat Buchanan asked her if she was dropping out of the Presidential race? Her answer, and I quote : "The rumors are being planted by people who don't want to see me comin"

Well, what can I say? I just think Carol Mosley-Braun is the greatest !

I also like the Barry White song "Let the Music Play". Such a carefree song and you do want to dance :)

Ohhhhh, thai food tonight. Yummy. I love the peanut sauce :)

You grew up in Chicago! Wow! I have noticed a lot of political figures grew up in Chicago, for example Hillary Clinton. Have you had the opportunity to meet Carol Mosley-Braun? I also learned that Harrison Ford (the actor) grew up in Chicago.

I have been to Chicago several times. Once it was for a Piano recital when I was very young. Only the best were chosen to go, I was very proud.

Wow, volleyball tonight with your S.O. Thats nice Peter, very nice. I wish you all the happiness in the world. I admire you so very much. I rely on your opinion all the time.

I hope you win the game tonight and have a wonderful dinner.

20. Hi!
If that teacher isn't still around I'll bet she's suffering somewhere with Strom right now :grr:.

When I was about 5 I wanted to be president. One of my earliest memories is of my mom telling me that I can accomplish anything I want but that many people would want to make it more difficult for me than it already was because I was black and a female. I thought for a moment then responded that if that's how people vote then I could get all the blacks and women to vote for me I'd have enough votes to win.

1. What Barry White songs do you like ?

He could sing anything and it would sound good. Years ago I heard a parody of Barry White singing the recipe off of a box of Minute Rice.

2. What are your dinner plans for tonight?

Not sure. I went out for fried clams and onion rings a few hours ago. I'll probably make a salad or something light for dinner.

3. What are YOU wearing right NOW?

A black skirt with a ton of little pink, orange, and yellow flowers on it and a maroon sleeveless shirt.

Now Barry White could sing anything and it would sound of so good. I agree jmm that his voice will become marketable in many ways. I hope he protected his voice and his "sound" because it is truly unique.

I love fried clams. Howard Johnsons, a resturant, makes them perfect. Not to done but not tough. I like the combo fried clams and onion rings, yummy :)

Why thank you for that compliment. I really appreciate that.

I have always been a follower of Carol Mosley-Braun and decided to research a few stats on her to share with DU. I learned a lot about her myself. I must admit, she is a dynamic woman and her qualification for President look very good.

As for my first question, the overwhelming response in this thread is Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love". Yes, it is very sad. I feel as if I lost a part of my past in a "living" form. Yet, I will continue to play his music to grab that part back. His music and talent is permanent.

Yeahhh, going out to dinner! Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for always being here for DU !

I had to come into the Lounge just to read your Monday post. :-)

Great stories as usual. Oh, by the way, make the ice cream sodas no fat and no calorie and I'll join you.

Ohhhhh, Barry White had the best voice. I get chills just thinking about those romantic tones of his. I have no favorite.

Oh damn, you caught me on an off night, dinner-wise. We're having frozen Lean Cuisine meals, corn on the cob (for my husband) and wax beans for me. A sugar-free fudgsicle for dessert.

I just worked out so I'm wearing exercise shorts and a tee shirt and sneakers. Just stunning!

I see your a Barry White fan and I love him to. Yes, "chills" is a good word to use when describing Barry White's music.

I like your dinner selections. I am an advocate of "Lean Cusine" frozen meals. I like the added touch of different vegetables. I have not tried the sugar free fudgsicles. I think I'll pick some up when I go shopping.

You seem to have a very healthy life-style and that is a good thing!
