Favorite and least favorite musical instruments?
I'm asking which are your favorite or least favorite to listen to, but feel free to answer which are your favorite/ least favorite to play if you prefer. If you just can't decide, feel free to trot out a bunch, or even a specific player for each specific instrument.

I have to go with tenor sax as favorite; phase-shifted electric piano (think Paul Simon in the early/mid 80s; that shimmery crap) as least favorite. And you?

Classic Moog Modular

Good --> provided a unique understanding of analog waveform manipulation & beautiful full sound. Monophonic.

Bad --> no memory (patches) constant servicing required & a PITA to lug around. Monophonic.

3. I like strings,
so violin/viola and (classical) guitar have to be favorite. Used to play the former, when I was surrounded by people that played strings or piano; now I play the latter.

Least favorite ... flute. Not enough interesting stuff going on with the waveforms and harmonics for my ear. Although electric piano would have to rank a close second, competing with clarinet.

5. Fuzzy, I'm a flute player, too.
I agree with the previous poster that it's sometimes a bit boring by itself, but really fun to play with other people.

6. Whaaaaa!!!! I hadn't noticed the flute hater.
x( There are some great things for unaccompanied flute, at least in the classical repertoire. The Bach "Partita in A Minor" and the Telemann "Fantasias" for example.

The classical stuff is really fun, but takes so much dang PRACTICE. That's why I mostly just jam with guitar players and such nowadays --it's a hell of a lot easier to just noodle around (once you figure out what key they're playing in), and it doesn't require so much brain power. I always noticed with classical that you practice and practice and it just sounds kind of like one note following another, and then all of a sudden one day, the MUSIC hits you, the rhythm starts to make sense suddenly, and then it gets a lot easier to play. It takes a lot of work, though. I guess I've gotten kind of lazy in my old age. I sure do love to sit down with a good guitar player, though, and just riff with it...that brings me the most pleasure.
