I want to address what seems to be a big problem here, from my vintage point.

I have seen numerous incidences and examples on DU, specially in the Lounge, of language being used in frankly disconcerning ways.

Posters here tend to fly by ear. The many-fauceted problem has been exasperated in the last week or so. Some may say it's just water over the bridge. I beg the difference. I'm not willing to take that laxadaisical attitude.

Let me ask a point-blunt question. If, for all intensive purposes, we're just shooting the fat around here, and there's not an iota of difference, for the most part, between good and badder language, how can we -- and here's the crutch of the matter -- separate the wheat from the shaft? :shrug:

Well, now the hat's on the other foot. From henceforth on, I'm taking a new attack. Instead of throwing up the ghost, I'm going to be the flaw in the ointment. I'm not going to ride herd over you people, but hopefully this will strike a responsive cord with someone.

Am I on shallow ground here? I'm listening attentatively.

I'm going to add my two cents to the discussion.

Nobody wants the language police around here, but wouldn't be taken more seriously if we policed ourselves just a little?

I'm so tired of seeing posters making intelligent, well-reasonsed posts "LOOSE" credibility while "TOWing" the party line. Ouch, ouch, OUCH!

I keep on biting my tongue, because people don't ask for my "ADVISE" anyhow. Many posters have a tendency to pile-on when anyone corrects a misuse of a word or mangles a metaphor.

If "YOUR" not going to be obnoxious about it, can't we all just try to "EXCEPT" a little constructive criticism about our use of the language?

It really is diffident to sort threw all the incantations of the American language on DU. Even in some of the pitchers, I see batched and flawed examples of pore righting skills and sometimes even the pot joining the kettle and just throwing out the baby without the bathwater.

It's disconsurting, to say the least, and I synchronize with your flight.
