DU Ladies: do you use mineral-based makeup?
Has anyone tried it? I'd like to know if it lives up to it's claims.

The only time I tried it, I splurged and went to a day spa to get a facial. They used mineral makeup on me as a finish up.

I really liked that it covered and concealed so well, and just powder at that. Less products to use.

If you've tried the nonstop infommercial kind that's OK too.

So, what have been your experiences with mineral makeup?

Edited on Fri May-27-05 06:25 PM by kmlewis
i love it. i use the foundation, mineral veil (powder), bisque(cover-up), radiance (a brightner), and powder liners. i plan to try their eye shadows soon.

i order mine from qvc.com that way i have 30 days to try each color and item and if i don't like it, can return for a refund.

3. It's very expensive, but effective.
Edited on Fri May-27-05 06:31 PM by philosophie_en_rose
It's like placing a filtered lens in front of anyone that looks at you. Very easy to use and gentle on your skin. It's expensive, but only a small amount is necessary.

I almost never wear makeup, so one set has lasted a long time. The brushes are necessary for it to blend properly. Generic won't do.

Some people on eBay sell "samplers" - small containers taken from bigger ones. However, those are still very expensive and not worth it.

I'd suggest waiting until QVC has a really good deal and then buying a small set.

15. It's not that expensive when you consider how long it lasts.
I bought my latest jar of foundation about six months ago and it's still going strong. The eyeshadows and liners will last me forever.

You can also get good prices at dermstore.com

I'm planning to visit the Bare Escentuals boutique at MOA when in MN this summer.

5. I've wondered about that too.
Right now I use the makeup line from Burt's Bees. I like that it is more natural looking. But I have been really interested in the mineral lines advertised.

7. It works really well
When they put it on me at the spa, I was surprised at how...er I don' t know how to say this... solid?... my face looked.

I say "solid" b/c my skin is so fair it's almost transparent, very thin and the tone is uneven. But hey, you couldn't see any of that.

8. i have had people mention the fact that i don't wear foundation
and i have to tell them that i am. i can't tell it is on but if i just put it on half my face there is such a difference.

i like qvc because your can order, say the foundation with a great brush and when (the next year) you need more foundation you can order a single that doesn't include the brush. the brushes are great.

i did get one of the new brushes (heavenly) off of ebay at half the price.

10. I'm very pale too.
You can see bluish veins around my eyes and I have freckles all over my nose. I want to conceal the veins for everyday wear but keep the freckles (which is why I like the Burt's Bees-my freckles still show through). At night, I want to cover my freckles and make my skin look flawless.
I wouldn't mind trying some of the powder for night use.

plus I have dark circles under my eyes. I was born with them. Without makeup, I look perpetually tired.

9. I am so glad you asked about this
I have been thinking about ordering Bare Minerals for the longest time. My sister uses it and loves it. I went to their website and went so far as filling out all the info but backed out. After reading all the good reviews here I will order it. Some of those info commercials really suck you in. I know! :P

31. Supernova, QVC is having a Bare Escentuals
"Today's Special Value" on June 8th. It's a great way to get some product, brushes, etcetera. Plus, if it doesn't work out, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund.

13. Yes. I use Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals and I love them.
A caution: it's really easy to use too much! Go for the tiniest amount you can, and if you need additional coverage you can add more. Be sure to buff it well into your skin, and then wait a few minutes for it to "develop" before deciding if you need heavier coverage.

I do my eyes while I let the foundation set. Nine times out of ten I don't need any more.

It goes a long way. I've canceled the membership because I still had a lot for the first order. I'd say it's well worth the money.

18. My skin is so sensitive it is all I can use.
Edited on Fri May-27-05 07:02 PM by alittlelark
I don't use it often... it's expensive, and 'Who Cares?', but there are always those occasions where you wanna look a little better than normal. The stuff is GREAT. I look 5-10 years younger when I wear it.

edited to say I use the 'Jane Iredale" (sp?) type.

19. No- Yuk
I have very pale very sensitive roseacea skin. I bought the whole line about how pure Bare Escentuals was.
Well, it broke me out badly every time I used it. Big fat painful custs.
Try before you buy.

I can certainly see why you would want to avoid makeup.

I have tried it once before with no problem.

21. Good experience
I started using it about two months ago and won't go back to liquid or cream based foundation. Use it sparingly and just tap, tap, swirl, swirl.

I have very dry skin, and most powders seem to make my face feel dry, and it gets all flaky.

28. I've found stuff that works.
But no matter how wonderful, putting powder on always seems to suck every bit of moisture out of my skin, even if I've applied said moisturizer on like spackle.

23. Don't be afraid to mix colors
I found I was using a too light color. But the next was too dark. So, I mix. The consistency mixes easily. Plus, in the summer, you may need to go a little darker if you tan. I don't use the mineral veil like you're supposed to as a final step. It just seems like too much. And the blushes fade on me too quickly. And I prefer Revlon's Colorstay eyeshadows. They last all day without fading.
But the foundation really works.

24. I have to find new eyeshadows
I was using L'Oreal eye shadows. But I seem to have developed an allergy to them. Last couple times I use it, my eyelids got all red, crusty and irritated.

29. I've only tried the powder so far...
...a product called Minerelles - but I totally love it. I don't wear foundation that often, but when I do, my face often gets shiny after a few hours, and I utterly hate hate hate that. Brushing the powder over the top, takes care of the problem completely. I can only recommend.

30. I do and I love it
I use Bare Escentuals. I've been using it for about two years. I also love their bath and body products. The learning curve is a week or so; it takes a few days to get comfortable with the application. Once you try it, though, you'll never go back to liquid again. I don't feel like I'm wearing makeup with Bare Escentuals. It looks VERY natural. Also, it will take a long time to use up the minerals if you're applying them correctly. In other words, the initial investment isn't cheap, but you won't have to refill for quite some time.

If you want to try Bare Escentuals, spend the cash to invest in a Kabuki brush. It's the best foundation applicator. I also was lucky enough to get a "makeunder" with BE's corporate makeup artist, Bravon; I got a LOT of great tips from him on using the makeup.

Have fun, and if you have questions, please PM me. I love to talk about BE!

Julie

33. I completely agree about the Kabuki. It's worth it.
I use the Kabuki brush to apply foundation and keep a Baby Buki in my purse for touch ups (I don't even have to add more minerals - just freshen up by running the Baby Buki over my face). I use one short-handled brush for blush and another short-handled brush for Mineral Veil.

Eyeshadow brushes are great for spot concealing.
