Sparrows of a Cold and Grey Spring Morning

I was waiting for the bus the other day
on a cold and grey spring morning.
The grass
had not even bloomed.
There was a fine mist
of last night’s rain that still
clung to that air.
I waited, warmth leaving my throat in white puffs,
aching
when
three soot-crowned sparrows came dive bombing
over my head and onto the sidewalk.
They danced and hopped
singing and flashing dusty pinions
into the morning sky
silently eating crumbs and seed.
They soon forgot me
and tumbled about my feet
so I extended my hand, two seeds on palm
to the ground.
They stopped and were quiet.
Their dark eyes
bright with life
strayed to my hand.
I didn’t breathe
didn’t dare to move.
But then the wind shifted.
And
they
flew
off.
