Russian Speakers/Readers: Help with "Peace Duke" Please!
Edited on Sat May-07-05 06:28 AM by NewHampshireDem
I'm trying to figure out the protest signs in Latvia that refer to * as "Peace Duke." It appears to be a pun on a Russian pejorative, but I can't find anything in English that explains what it is.

<on edit> It apprears the message board doesn't like the cyrillic characters ...

Google <"peace duke" and Bush> you get a bunch of results in Russian so you could probably figure it out for all of us.

2. Here
About 1/2 way down the page ... has a number "33"

http://www.anekdot.ru/an/an0304/f030411;10.html

This google search has a link third from the bottom that has Russian words in quotes followed by an English translation (peace duke) in parenthesis

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22peace+duke%22+bush&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&safe=off&start=20&sa=N

Here is another with humorous quotations in Russian ... 'peace duke' is in the third from the bottom:

I hope you can make some sense of this. Thanks! :hi:

3. Here it is
This doesn't make sense at all. May be it is some sort of russian aphorism. I don't know. The translation is correct though.

The first anecdote:
In spite of the expectations, the people participating in the demonstration in front of the US embassy in Moscow gave high marks to Bush's contribution to the Middle East peace plan. According to the CNN correspondent, the protestors chanted in english "Bush Peace Duke".

And the second one:
In the ensligh parliament they are surprised that russians call their senators 'peace dukes'.

Seems like this is some sort of russian aphorisms but I don't know the origins of it. It just makes no sense to me.

4. Hmm ... well, thanks anyway. :)
I've tried to get ahold of my dad to see if it means anything in Latvian. It could be a 'homynym' or whatever you would call it ... With my grandmother's accent, she would probably say it like "pis-tuke" or "pea-stuke." If I find anything out I'll post here.
