100. We were the Pioneers (Class of 1956) . Along with the 1955 class,
we were the first classes in a brand new school.

They plan to tear it down soon and build a newer school.

Next year, I'm hoping to go to Florida for our 50th Reunion.

2. Mascot? or school nickname?
I don't think our mascot had a name.

Our school nickname was the Chargers.

16. Ok, to me the mascot (and its name)
is the animal, statue, person in costume that goes along with what the school nickname is.

For example, at out high school the mascot would be a horse but our nickname is the Chargers.

At the University of Connecticut, the nickname is Huskies but the mascot (a Husky dog) his hame is Jonathan.

3. do US highschools really have them?
Edited on Thu May-05-05 08:51 PM by Djinn
I always thought it was a bit of sitcom cliche, Australia schools don't really do the "school spirit" thing, apparently mine had a school song but until our valedictory dinner no-one in my year knew it even existed.

If we had a nickname at all it was "that school where the private school kids go after getting expelled"

29. Here's some weird HS nicknames:
Wahpeton, North Dakota High School used to have the nickname "Wops". They had to change it to "Huskies" for obvious reasons.

Devils Lake, North Dakota also had to change their nickname. Theirs used to be the "Satans". They're now the "Firebirds". I wish they could've kept the "Satans" name. That was wicked cool.

Dickinson, North Dakota High School's nickname is still the "Midgets".

Wahpeton Wops
Devils Lake Satans
Dickinson Midgets

No wonder no one wants to move here...

We have the St.Clairsville,Ohio Red Devils here and a couple years ago they were raising hell about this being devil worship. My school was the Martins Ferry, Ohio Purple Riders, I'm surprised we haven't been attacked for supporting the "gay agenda". It's just a matter of time!

Fighting Tigers.. Our band uniforms really sucked during summer parades. Black wool/poly sweaters and black pants. Finally, by my senior year, we convinced them that we needed to change the uniforms. Black T-shirts, with orange lettering and black pants. It was still hot, but better than those damn sweaters.

in TN, so you know that every year, there was a call to change our mascot to something stupid like the Cardnals or whatever red bird is out there. Of course, they didn't want to fork over the money to change the gym, football field, and all school stationary w/ "RED DEVILS" written on it, so Red Devils we stay. :eyes:

55. Black Raiders
The name came from a high school football game in about 1938 when the team in white uniforms known as the East High Warriors went across town in a late fall blizzard and beat the favored Maroons from Central 7-6 in front of a crowd of over 10,000 fans. In the mud the white uniforms turned black and the local paper said that a hardy band of black raiders stole the game from favored Central.

The name stuck.

64. Colts
The name came from the revolver not the horse, although a horse was used. High School was built at or near the orginal factory of Samuel Colt.

65. I swear this is true! We were "The Stoners"
The area I am from in upstate NY was famous for Sandstone. The guys who mined and cut the stone were called "Sandstoners", which was shortened to "Stoners."

We honored that name proudly...in more ways than one.

72. Rebels...so named because Jefferson Davis was born in the county
it was a consolidation of four small high schools and much care was taken to not duplicate any mascot names previously in use, and to use everybody's colors, somehow.

Red and Gray, Rebels, Todd Central

and for one year I went to a school with Ramblers as the mascot.

99. The Del Mar Dons!
Our school district had 2 hs's--but they were overcrowded, so a new one was built. And kids from the two rivals went to the new one, and everybody got along great. We had a lively old guy who lived nearby, who watched the school's construction. We adopted him as our live mascot...his name was Pitcher Long...Those were the days!

124. The Colonials
I went to Morristown High School in Morristown, NJ (Class of 1971). Since Morristown was the military capital of the colonies during two winters of the Revolutionary War, our sports teams were all "Colonials". The marching band (The "Marching Colonials") wears uniforms that look like colonial army outfits, complete with three-corner hats.

Our actual mascot was "Mr. Colonial", a guy in a Revolutionary War outfit who cavorts on the sidelines with the cheerleaders. I was almost "Mr. Colonial" my senior year - I came in second in the voting.
